From Saturday, June 17 – Monday, June 19, 2023, join the Museum of the American Revolution in Philadelphia to celebrate Juneteenth and explore the continuing struggle for equality for all. At the Museum, visitors can explore the special exhibition “Black Founders: The Forten Family of Philadelphia,” which examines the life and legacy of free Black Philadelphian, Revolutionary War privateer, and successful businessman James Forten and his descendants as they navigated the American Revolution and cross-racial relationships in Philadelphia to become leaders in the abolition movement in the lead-up to the Civil War and the women’s suffrage movement. The exhibit is open daily from 11am – 5pm and is included in regular Museum admission.

Throughout the weekend, visitors of all ages also can listen to pop-up talks about Phillis Wheatley, the first published Black female poet, and engage with a discovery cart about Harry Washington, who was enslaved by the Washingtons and found freedom through service in the British army. Plus, both indoor and outdoor walking tours about Black voices from the Revolutionary era also will be available.
