DESCRIPTION:In Driving While Black\, a film by Dr. Gretchen Sorin and Ric Burns\, viewers discover how the advent of the automobile brought new mobility and freedom for African Americans—and exposed them to discrimination and deadly violence. It also examines the complex dynamics of race\, space\, and mobility that are still deeply embedded in the American experience today. This documentary is based on Sorin’s 2020 book\, Driving While Black: African American Travel and the Road to Civil Rights. Participants who register for this program will have the opportunity to view the documentary on their own before joining us for a facilitated discussion. The evening will begin with a welcome by Ric Burns and Dr. Gretchen Sorin. Dr. Miller W. Boyd III\, a ninth-grade social studies teacher and the director of the Steward Scholars Program\, will give a brief overview of how Green Books were used in St. Louis. The audience can then participate in facilitated dialogue with Sarah Pharaon\, principal of Dialogic Consulting\, and Dina Bailey\, CEO of Mountain Top Vision. \nRegistration for this program is free. This exhibit is not a biography of Attucks the man. Like many 18th-century figures\, he did not leave behind a long paper trail telling his story in his own words. However\, we have vivid stories of his actions and the time in which he lived. Reflecting Attucks is a story about how Americans turned the memory of Attucks into a powerful symbol of the courage and sacrifice needed to achieve change.

SUMMARY:Student Publications on Racial Injustice and Social Change
DESCRIPTION:In June 2020\, members of The Yale Historical Review (YHR) founded The 1701 Project\, an initiative on racial injustice and social change. Although unrelated\, we draw inspiration from Nikole Hannah-Jones and her colleagues’ examination of slavery’s legacies in The 1619 Project. The 1701 Project (a nod to the year of Yale’s founding) analyzes our university’s and our nation’s racist histories through an ongoing series of articles\, interviews\, and art. We have extended this conversation beyond New Haven\, partnering with publications from other institutions across the country. This coalition\, titled Of Many Strands (the name borrowed from the epilogue of Ralph Ellison’s The Invisible Man)\, has to create a central online repository for our journals. The 1701 Project and Of Many Strands seek to foster dialogue about our history in order to change our society today.
