SUMMARY:Museum Exhibition - "Bronzeville to Harlem: An American Story"
DESCRIPTION:Twenty-five years in the making\, “Bronzeville to Harlem: An American Story\,” created by artist Preston Jackson\, is a sculptural installation comprised of hundreds of unique small bronze and steel figures\, relief sculptures\, automobiles\, buildings\, streets and a truss bridge. Originally entitled “From Bronzeville to Harlem\,” the cityscape is a simultaneously playful and serious contemplation of the individual stories that made up the urban centers from places such as Peoria\, Chicago’s Bronzeville and the Harlem neighborhoods of Manhattan. \nThis summer\, the exhibition is enhanced with Archibald Motley’s\, “Bronzeville at Night”\, on longterm loan form Art Bridges. “In ‘Bronzeville at Night\,’ we glimpse at a darkened street in the Bronzeville neighborhood of Chicago that in the early 1900s rivaled Harlem\, New York.

This is a special release of “Created Equal\,” a museum theatre exploration of African American perspectives on the Declaration\, the revolutions it inspired\, and the ongoing struggle for equality and freedom in America. Beneath the Floorboards is an exhibition telling the stories of the enslaved African Americans who once resided at Marlpit Hall. SUMMARY:North Carolina Special Edition: Durham Royal Ice Cream Parlor Sit-In
DESCRIPTION:Speakers: Mrs. Mary Clyburn Hooks and Ms. Virginia Williams \nOn June 23\, 1957\, Rev. Douglas Moore of Asbury Temple Methodist Church led six young African Americans into Durham’s segregated Royal Ice Cream Parlor. The group entered the “Colored” entrance at the back of the restaurant and proceeded to the White section\, where they sat down and ordered ice cream. Denied service\, the protestors refused to leave. They were arrested and fined $10\, plus court fees. The Royal Ice Cream sit-in provoked controversy in not only the White community; it created a huge uproar among Black citizens\, many of whose members viewed the protesters not as freedom fighters but as troublemakers. Although the sit-in did not receive a lot of support\, it did help inspire future protests\, including the Greensboro F. W. Woolworth store lunch-counter sit-ins. Join us on the 65th anniversary of the Royal Ice Cream Parlor sit-in\, as two of the protestors share their memories of that historic day. \nMary Clyburn Hooks is a native of Monroe\, North Carolina. As a young woman\, she moved to Durham\, hoping to acquire an education and work in a more progressive town. After participating in the sit-in\, Hooks married and started a family. She attended North Carolina College at Durham (now North Carolina Central University)\, before settling in New Jersey. Virginia Williams came to Durham from her home in rural Northampton County\, seeking employment. After attending a political meeting\, the two young women felt compelled to take part in the upcoming protest. Following the events at the Royal Ice Cream Parlor\, Williams participated in other Durham demonstrations. She retired from a long career in food services and still resides in Durham.

DESCRIPTION:Travel back in time to the 19th century during our Underground Railroad historic home tours\, with a special weekend focus on Juneteenth. In 2002\, Spring Hill was listed on the National Park Service’s Network to Freedom trail for the Rotch’s involvement in Underground Railroad activity in 1820 & 1821 (documented). Spring Hill farm in Kendal (later Massillon) Ohio served as a safe haven on the Underground Railroad as early as 1817 up until the Civil War.

This year’s dynamic program will feature a series of curated experiences leading visitors across campus to explore the history of Juneteenth itself and Black innovation\, life\, and excellence since emancipation in Atlanta.
