SUMMARY:American Conversations Essay Contest
DESCRIPTION:American Conversations is an essay contest open to residents of Founders’ Place Historical District\, Inc. between the ages of 17 – 29. This is our second year to participate in Civic Season and to offer the essay contest as a way to engage you people in expressing their ideas about our history and civic questions. This year’s topics are:\n– According to Merle Haggard’s 1971 song Okie from Muskogee\, “we still wave Old Glory down at the courthouse.” Is the flag as important a symbol in American life today as it was in generations past? How do your ideas about the flag differ from your parents’ or grandparents’ generation?\n– How are you committed to making America\, and in particular Muskogee\, a better place? What things have you done to ensure the future of our city and country remains not just strong\, but also just and equitable\, supporting the ideals on which our country was founded?\n– What does it mean to “be an American”? Should civics be taught in school again as a stand-alone class? It has been proposed that everyone pass a citizenship test to vote. Is this a good idea?\n– Our neighborhood\, Founders’ Place\, was carved out of the allotment given to Chief Pleasant Porter under the Dawes Act. How do you see tribal sovereignty and the common public good coming together in Oklahoma or our country? How could we in Founders’ Place acknowledge the Native lands our homes are built on\, or should we? Did any well-known Native Americans live in our neighborhood? How could they be honored?\n– Is democracy more about individual rights and freedoms or the collective good? Should the rights of the individual supersede those of society? Is it possible to balance both\, so that singular individual freedoms do not overpower the democracy of the whole? Give examples. \nPrizes are given for the best essay submissions. The contest runs parallel with our neighborhood home decorating contest from Juneteenth to July 4th.

SUMMARY:Explore the Richmond Uprising Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:In both the Richmond Bread Riot of 1863 and the ongoing protests against police brutality\, we hear the voice of people who suffer from inequitable systems – in 1863\, it was food distribution and inflation; now\, it is systemic racism in the law enforcement and criminal justice system. Though not the same\, placing the two protests side-by-side suggests enduring questions about protesting in America. Why are people compelled to do it? What happens when those in authority do not listen to the cries of their citizens? Is there a legitimate or illegitimate way to protest? What kind of solutions can protestors force authorities to concede\, if any? Join us in thinking about these questions in this virtual exhibit.

SUMMARY:Environmental Justice! Community Research Guide
DESCRIPTION:Environmental Justice! How can we create environments that are healthy for everyone? is a freely available community research guide developed by the Smithsonian Science Education Center (SSEC) in partnership with the InterAcademy Partnership as part of the Smithsonian Science for Global Goals project. \nThe Environmental Justice! guide helps young people learn more about the concerns of their community in order to communicate accurate\, helpful\, and trusted information about environmental justice. \nEnvironmental Justice! features 8 tasks that incorporate investigations and hands-on science to help students discover\, understand\, and take action. Students learn about how they interact with their environment; research environmental justice throughout history; learn about a specific environmental issue in their area and the causes of this problem; examine how different environments can make people more or less healthy; discover the themes of injustices; learn more to understand some innovative solutions to environmental problems; and develop an action plan for their communities.

SUMMARY:American Music Landmarks Project
DESCRIPTION:During Civic Season and beyond\, the American Music Landmarks Project (AMLP) seeks to help young music fans everywhere find unique opportunities to explore and be inspired by places that defined their favorite artists and genres as well as those they have yet to discover. Our new millennial-founded organization is excited to assist young Americans in adding their voices as present and future stewards of our music history’s architectural legacy through connecting them with virtual and on-site tours\, special events and volunteer experiences to meaningfully participate in the ongoing preservation\, maintenance and interpretation of music landmarks. The AMLP understands that the presence of youth in transforming our music landmarks from built history to built heritage is essential to further democratizing and diversifying public awareness\, appreciation and support for the places that tell the story of our collective musical past. Reach out at info@musiclandmarks.org and let us help you identify an opportunity with a music landmark this Civic Season!

SUMMARY:Resistance at Home Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:Artwork created by youth\, for youth\, Resistance At Home is the culminating exhibition of artwork created by YouthCAN artists meditating on meanings of home and collective struggle. \nExplore identity and culture through art with the limited time exhibit at Wing Luke Museum. With a wide lens\, Resistance at Home seeks to uncover the ways in which we resist the US empire’s white supremacy\, queerphobia\, patriarchy\, and racial capitalism while situated in the belly of the beast. On a personal level\, Resistance at Home explores how we can take action in our own lives\, interrogate notions of home\, and recognize the personal as political. \nFrom Filipino labor organizing in the 20th century to contemporary gentrification in the Chinatown International District (CID)\, students explored the varied histories of Asian American\, Native Hawaiian\, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) resistance. \nYouthCAN is the Wing Luke Museum’s free art program for anyone aged 13-19 of all levels of artistic experience.
