SUMMARY:How We Became America: The Untold History
DESCRIPTION:“Untold” is a free collection of short\, compelling\, history videos and animations designed to: engage new audiences in a new conversation; shine a light on the stories that don’t always make it into the classroom; and question what we think we know about those that do. Not everything worth knowing exists inside the cover of our history textbooks. “Untold” is here to fill in the gaps and bring new stories to life. \nThe American Battlefield Trust is debuting a 15-part installment in the “Untold” series focused on topics in civics and the founding era/first 100 years of America. \nVideos in partnership with Driving Force Institute for Public Engagement’s “Untold” DFI initiative\, produced and distributed by Makematic and the University of Southern California’s Center for Engagement-Driven Global Education

SUMMARY:History Café: Revisiting Initiative 13 And LGBT Activism In The 70s
DESCRIPTION:Initiative 13\, sponsored by Save Our Moral Ethics\, sought to repeal Seattle’s ordinances protecting gay and lesbian employment and housing rights and to abolish the Office of Women’s Rights. The story of grassroots organizations Seattle Committee Against Thirteen (SCAT) and Women Against Thirteen (WAT) and their outreach gives a view into the creative tensions inherent in organizing. Join organizers from the campaign to learn and see lessons that can be applied today. \nDetailed information on how to participate will be provided via email following registration. Space is limited\, so register soon! \nCo-presented by MOHAI and the Northwest Lesbian and Gay History Museum Project. History Café is produced as a partnership between MOHAI and HistoryLink.

SUMMARY:Jasmine Cho’s Portraits in Icing
DESCRIPTION:The Heinz History Center’s past exhibition\, Smithsonian’s Portraits of Pittsburgh: Works from the National Portrait Gallery\, reminded us of the remarkable national impact of people whose lives have intersected with this region. But the exhibition also challenges us to recognize the gaps in this legacy. Too many faces and stories still lack representation in contemporary museum collections. This is especially true for portraiture\, a type of art that by its very nature was immersed in issues of power and status. Why do some stories predominate while others are missing in these spaces and collections\, primarily the legacies of women and people of color? How can we broaden definitions of American achievement today and ensure that a fuller spectrum of stories and people are represented?

SUMMARY:Director's Tour: Voting Rights 1920-2021
DESCRIPTION:2020 marked the 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment which enfranchised half of the population by granting women the right to vote. Learn about Margaret Brown’s own role in the suffrage movement and how much of the work to get women to the polls only just began in 1920\, and together we’ll draw the topic forward to contemporary issues of voting rights. Time is in MDT.

SUMMARY:The Independence of Poe: A Declaration of a Different Sort
DESCRIPTION:In 1826\, one of America’s Founding Fathers crossed paths with one of the new nation’s defining writers when University of Virginia student Edgar Allan Poe attended Thomas Jefferson’s funeral. Just as Jefferson had declared the nation’s political\, religious\, and architectural independence from England\, the young Poe would soon issue America’s Declaration of Literary and Artistic Independence. But how did Poe define American literature at a time when the young nation was still trying to define itself? Join the Poe Museum’s curator Chris Semtner for a discussion of the ways Poe’s time in Albemarle County inspired him to break American literature free of its dependence upon European models and values. This will be a virtual program\, June 29 at 6pm EDT.
