DESCRIPTION:Join the Carpenters’ Company and CraftNOW for a special Saturday morning crafting program on June 25th. Local artist and lecturer at the Weitzman School of Design and Lincoln University Heather Raquel Phillips will facilitate a hands-on workshop in subverting tropes of advertisement/sports culture into agents of social change. Participants will design and make an individualized pennant that expresses a topic or opinion that is important to them and represents their beliefs and values. It’s a fun and engaging way to celebrate the freedom of expression that’s such an important part of our democracy. \nThis event will be held just a few blocks away from Carpenters’ Hall at our neighbors’ Art in the Age. DESCRIPTION:In-person\, in the Nan Tucker McEvoy Auditorium at the National Portrait Gallery \nQueer identity and disability – how can portraits help us understand these themes? Join a conversation with artist and educator Riva Lehrer and Cuban American writer Achy Obejas. Obejas was the subject of Lehrer’s piece that was a finalist in the Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition and is now on view in “The Outwin 2022: American Portraiture Today.” \nAs a part of the Tommie L. Pegues and Donald A. Capoccia Conversation Series in LGBTQ+ Portraiture\, this event will explore themes related to queer identity and disability. Moderated by the National Portrait Gallery’s curator of painting\, sculpture\, and Latinx art and history Taína Caragol\, and historian Mindy Farmer\, the conversation will also examine Lehrer’s method for creating Obejas’ portrait and the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. \nThe Portrait Gallery strives to provide programs that are accessible to all visitors. If you have questions about the accessibility of this program or would like to request accommodations\, please contact Vanessa Jones at jonesve@si.edu. Two weeks advance notice is appreciated for requesting additional accommodations.\nThe Smithsonian Institution is currently in a medium level regarding COVID-19 community levels in the DC/MD/VA region. While masks are not required for general visitors\, the National Portrait Gallery\, as part of the Smithsonian\, is a mask friendly environment. Also new is Red\, White & Booze: A Star-Spangled Tipsy History. For the grown-ups only\, this lighthearted after-hours tour combines a patriotic cocktail with fun\, historical tidbits delivered by Betsy Ross\, herself on Friday\, June 17. \nEach day of the week starts at 10 a.m. in the House’s courtyard with an interactive flag raising. On several days of the festival\, Betsy will raise flags representing diverse groups\, including the Pride flag and the Juneteenth flag. \nFrom 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day guests will be treated to free\, historical programming from colonial chocolate making to fun flag history presented by Betsy Ross\, and the chance to meet History Makers. From Thursday through Sunday\, Flag Fest visitors will be among the first to experience Meet the Women of 18th Century Philadelphia.
