SUMMARY:Civic Season Kickoff: Screening of "Family History: What Inspires Genealogy Research?"
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special screening featuring two genealogical researchers as they discuss what sparked their passion for genealogy\, the methods they use\, and the work and companies they’ve created as a result.\nDennis Richmond Jr. has written books and articles and is a frequent public speaker about his experience; his day job is teaching 7th- and 8th- grade history. Anna Pei is the granddaughter of architect I.M. Pei and founded the company Ode Archival\, which protects memories from decay and celebrates the overlooked but extraordinary details of our lives. The conversation between Dennis and Anna will be moderated by Margi Hofer\, senior vice president and Museum director\, who frequently does genealogy research to tell a fuller story of the art and artifacts in New-York Historical’s collection. This program is part of Civic Season\, an annual that takes place from Juneteenth to July 4 and invites visitors to commemorate the rich\, complex history of the American experiment through a wide range of exhibition displays and programs.

SUMMARY:"How Do You Solve a Problem like Columbus?"
DESCRIPTION:Our society is engaged in debates about symbols in America\, their meaning and public display. Symbols are subjective and their interpretation can be influenced by personal experience. Symbols are especially complicated when they are made in the image of a historical figure. Christopher Columbus is one such case. Is it possible to both publicly laud and protest the same person? This is where we find ourselves today. But how did we get here?
