As the population grew\, the people who lived in the United States found ways to negotiate\, or work out\, what it meant to be American. That negotiation continues. This exhibition explores how the many voices of people in America have shaped our nation.

SUMMARY:The Color of Law: A Forgotten History of How Our Government Segregated America
DESCRIPTION:Listen in as Richard Rothstein and Lila Corwin Berman discuss contemporary racial segregation across the United States. The panelists will dig into the history of public housing projects\, suburbanization\, and the actions of the federal housing administration and then interrogate the racial segregation and income gap in America today as a byproduct of explicit government policies at the local\, state and federal levels. Touching on the negative effects of these policies on African Americans and the United States as a whole\, Rothstein and Berman will address how Jewish Americans specifically benefited from and suffered as a result of these policies.

DESCRIPTION:The celebration kicks off at 10 a.m. Sunday\, June 13 when Betsy Ross\, herself\, raises the flag in the courtyard to mark the beginning of National Flag Week.  Once Upon A Nation Storytellers will entertain from the courtyard stage\, telling short\, interactive and little-known stories featuring our nation’s flag. \n\n\n\nOther highlights of the week will include the ongoing assembly of a larger-than-life American flag made entirely of M&M’s®. Enjoy free samples provided by Mars Wrigley and photo ops with the completed flag on Sunday\, June 13.  The moving\, annual naturalization ceremony will welcome 13 new citizens on Flag Day and during the week\, visitors will meet figures from history\, including famous suffragists and\, of course\, Betsy Ross\, herself. \n\n\n\nAll week\, the first 100 visitors to the House each day will receive free admission. Please note: free admission is only available on-site on a first-come\, first-served basis. We suggest guests arrive early to receive free admission. \n\n\n\nFree admission and Flag Fest programming are being made possible with the generous support of a patriotic friend of the Betsy Ross House.

This is what democracy looks like!”—this site explores what democracy looks like from the perspectives of five organizers working in today’s undocumented movement. Through their stories\, these organizers invite us to look beyond the headlines and the issues often associated with undocumented immigrants\, from DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) to the DREAMers.
