SUMMARY:DACA Organizers on What Democracy Looks Like
DESCRIPTION:Taking a cue from the popular protest call-and-response—”Show me what democracy looks like! This is what democracy looks like!”—this site explores what democracy looks like from the perspectives of five organizers working in today’s undocumented movement. Through their stories\, these organizers invite us to look beyond the headlines and the issues often associated with undocumented immigrants\, from DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) to the DREAMers. In the process\, they stretch our imagination by offering fresh approaches to familiar topics such as community\, citizenship\, belonging\, and even identity itself.

SUMMARY:Explore the "Many Voices\, One Nation" Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:The people of North America came from many cultures and spoke different languages long before the founding of the United States\, even before European contact. In creating the new nation\, early leaders envisioned a country that promised opportunity and freedom—but only for some. As the population grew\, the people who lived in the United States found ways to negotiate\, or work out\, what it meant to be American. That negotiation continues. This exhibition explores how the many voices of people in America have shaped our nation.

SUMMARY:Haunted Halloween History
DESCRIPTION:Halloween was introduced to the United States by Irish and Scottish immigrants in the mid-1800s. Read here how it became the very American holiday we think of today\, including how railroads and telegraphs changed it\, and about the woman who invented “trick or treat.” This article includes an activity for kids to write a Halloween story and design a costume. \nReading Level: Grade 8 \nAmerica250 is a multi-year effort to commemorate the semiquincentennial\, or 250th anniversary\, of the United States. The purpose of the U.S. Semiquincentennial Commission\, created by Congress\, and the corresponding America250 Foundation\, is to catalyze a more perfect union by designing and leading the most comprehensive and inclusive celebration in our country’s history. America250 represents a coalition of public and private partners all working to create initiatives and programs that honor our first 250 years and inspire Americans to imagine our next 250.

SUMMARY:No-No Boy
DESCRIPTION:No-No Boy tells the story of Ichiro Yamada\, a fictional version of the real-life “no-no boys.” Yamada answered “no” twice in a compulsory government questionnaire as to whether he would serve in the armed forces and swear loyalty to the United States. Unwilling to pledge himself to the country that interned him and his family\, Ichiro earns two years in prison and the hostility of his family and community when he returns home to Seattle. As Ozeki writes\, Ichiro’s “obsessive\, tormented” voice subverts Japanese postwar “model-minority” stereotypes\, showing a fractured community and one man’s “threnody of guilt\, rage\, and blame as he tries to negotiate his reentry into a shattered world.”
