Although President Abraham Lincoln freed enslaved people held in the Confederate States through the Emancipation Proclamation of 1863\, many slaveholders in Texas refused to comply. Since 1865\, Southern citizens have observed Juneteenth in commemoration of that fateful day in Galveston. \nToday\, Juneteenth serves as a holiday to reflect on our nation’s history\, commemorate emancipation\, and look towards the future impact of Black culture and community. In 2021\, President Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act into law\, making Juneteenth a federal holiday. \nJoin us as we celebrate Juneteenth 2023 (and Father’s Day) by honoring the history of Black genealogy and agricultural practices. This year’s event promises to be a truly immersive experience featuring live music\, powerful storytelling\, interactive crafts\, and delicious food. \nOur workshops and talks will provide valuable insights into the history of Juneteenth and offer tips on how to research your family tree and preserve family artifacts. \nThis program is part of Atlanta History Center’s celebration of the Civic Season\, a nationwide initiative encouraging historically-informed civic participation through a two-week activation between Juneteenth and July 4th.

It has long been associated with the U.S. Military\, and is often played at civilian events around the country. \nThe National WWI Museum and Memorial presents the ninth annual Taps at the Tower each evening at sunset (8:45 p.m.) from Sunday\, June 18 – Saturday\, June 24\, 2023. \nPeople are invited to come and use the grounds each evening\, have a picnic\, play games and enjoy the outdoors. At sunset\, people will gather at the Liberty Memorial Tower to experience Taps being played during a brief\, moving ceremony. The event will occur rain or shine. In the event of inclement weather\, the ceremony will be moved to the Paul Sunderland Bridge inside the Museum and Memorial.

DESCRIPTION:From Saturday\, June 17 – Monday\, June 19\, 2023\, join the Museum of the American Revolution in Philadelphia to celebrate Juneteenth and explore the continuing struggle for equality for all. At the Museum\, visitors can explore the special exhibition “Black Founders: The Forten Family of Philadelphia\,” which examines the life and legacy of free Black Philadelphian\, Revolutionary War privateer\, and successful businessman James Forten and his descendants as they navigated the American Revolution and cross-racial relationships in Philadelphia to become leaders in the abolition movement in the lead-up to the Civil War and the women’s suffrage movement. The exhibit is open daily from 11am – 5pm and is included in regular Museum admission. \nThroughout the weekend\, visitors of all ages also can listen to pop-up talks about Phillis Wheatley\, the first published Black female poet\, and engage with a discovery cart about Harry Washington\, who was enslaved by the Washingtons and found freedom through service in the British army. DESCRIPTION:Join us at Jamestown Settlement on Wednesday\, June 14\, for a thought-provoking evening of history and performance exploring the precarious nature of freedom from 17th-century Jamestown to Juneteenth. \nAlthough Juneteenth springs from events that happened in Galveston\, Texas on June 19\, 1865\, the event celebrates liberation from a system of slavery with origins in Jamestown\, Va.\, as the place where the first recorded Africans in 1619 were brought after landing at Old Point Comfort and where the first slave laws enacted in the mid-17th century impacted the lives and status of Africans and their descendants. \nAs a prelude to Juneteenth\, Dr. Cassandra Newby-Alexander\, Endowed Professor of Virginia Black History and Culture at Norfolk State University\, takes up that legacy in history 246 years later at the end of the American Civil War to share the story of Black regiments attached to Virginia’s Army of the James. \nSome of these regiments were sent to Texas after the war to patrol the gulf region that included Galveston. Among their duties was keeping the peace after news of the Emancipation Proclamation was delivered to Galveston’s enslaved inhabitants. \nInterludes of song by Sylvia Tabb Lee & the Rejoicing Singers and dramatic readings from primary sources will complement the evening.

DESCRIPTION:Every year\, Monticello’s West Portico becomes an outdoor courtroom where dozens of individuals take the Oath of Citizenship to become Americans. This ceremony is marked by music from the Charlottesville Municipal Band and the Old Line Fife and Drum Corps. After the ceremony\, visitors enjoy root beer floats and children’s activities on the West Lawn.
