DESCRIPTION:This annual event is inspired by the original 1969 Freedom Seder\, where hundreds of people of all backgrounds gathered to explore and celebrate freedom in the context of the Civil Rights Movement on the third night of Passover and the one-year anniversary of Dr. King’s assassination. \nTypically an in-person event at the Museum on Independence Mall for 300 participants of all faiths\, races\, and beliefs\, the tradition continues virtually in 2021 with the re-airing of a beautiful selection of stories and performances presented at this signature NMAJH event since its inception in 2013\, interspersed with live commentary. Each story offers a unique perspective on the meaning of freedom in America today.

DESCRIPTION:From the 17th century to the 21st\, enslavement—even when it took place outside of Massachusetts—shaped the province and the state in significant ways. It was and has been central to creating wealth: family fortunes\, institutional endowments\, and public budgets in Massachusetts have benefited from its spoils. This panel explores the Commonweath’s connections to slavery and the trade of enslaved people\, the wealth—and the poverty—enslavement created and bequeathed\, and how the legacies of enslavement are reflected in injustices that haunt Massachusetts to this day. \nThis five-part series was developed by the Northeastern University School of Law Criminal Justice Task Force. It is hosted by the Massachusetts Historical Society and sponsored by a number of Boston-area organizations.

DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, Jun. 16\, 7 p.m. via Zoom\nPresenters: Earl Ijames\, Curator of African American\, Agriculture\, and Community History\, North Carolina Museum of History; Chrystal Regan\, Education Section Chief\, North Carolina Museum of History \nJuneteenth (short for “June Nineteenth”) marks the day in 1865 (June 19th) when federal troops arrived in Galveston\, Texas\, to take control of the state and ensure that all enslaved people were freed—a full two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed and more than two months after America’s Civil War “officially” ended. Juneteenth—a celebration that spread the word about the passage of the 13th Amendment\, which outlawed slavery in the United States—is an important milestone in the fight for equality and provides an opportunity for us all to pause and consider the meaning of freedom and to rededicate ourselves to telling stories that reflect all members of our community. \nPlease join Ijames and Regan in an insightful conversation to examine the history behind this holiday and reveal why its celebration is more important now than ever.
