SUMMARY:Class Action Opening Day
DESCRIPTION:Join the DC History Center for grand opening of our new exhibit: Class Action: Education and Opportunity in the Nation’s Capital. The exhibit opens to the public Saturday\, June 28. From 2 to 6 pm\, you can: \n📚 Be among the first to explore the exhibit.\n🗣️ Chat with the folks who made it happen.\n🎯 Play classic recess games (for kids and grown-ups!)\n🎨 Design your own button.\n🛍️ Shop the revamped DC History Center store.\n📸 Take home duplicate copies from the Capitol Photo Service collection (with a suggested donation).\n📢 Help us spread the word—history class has never been this fun!\nBring your curiosity\, your friends\, and your love for DC history—we’ll bring the celebration! \nABOUT THE EXHIBIT\nClass Action: Education and Opportunity in the Nation’s Capital features stories of dedicated teachers\, school leaders\, parents\, students\, and activists who have worked to protect and strengthen DC’s tradition of Black educational excellence. Class photos and yearbooks along with playful vintage furniture and costumes invite hands-on exploration of what it means to grow up and go to school in the nation’s capital. \nCommunity members built and ran their own schools until the end of slavery\, when Congress created DC’s separate Black school system. Over the course of the next century\, racism prevented many African American scholars from pursuing their chosen careers. Instead\, they became teachers in the nation’s capital\, helping the city earn a national reputation for its outstanding Black schools. \nThe exhibit also highlights Black Washingtonians’ fight for their fair share of resources\, even after the Supreme Court finally desegregated DC’s “separate but equal” schools. The stories of people who lived this history\, along with class photos\, yearbooks\, and more\, are evidence of how local activism created lasting change. \nClass Action invites you to explore this inspiring legacy—and to reflect on how schools have shaped you and your community\, wherever you’re from. \nEXHIBIT HOURS\nClass Action is the DC History Center’s first major exhibition since 2019\, on display through 2030. The exhibit is free and open to the public. Regular exhibit hours will be Thursday-Sunday from 12 pm to 6 pm. \nTHANK YOU TO OUR EXHIBIT SPONSORS\nClass Action: Education and Opportunity in the Nation’s Capital is made possible thanks to the District of Columbia Executive Office of the Mayor–Office of the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development; the Institute for Museum and Library Services; Events DC; the Kiplinger Family Foundation; and the Julie B. Koczela Exhibit Fund. \nJune 28\, 2025\n2:00 pm–6:00 pm

SUMMARY:ABHM Book Club: Great Speeches By Frederick Douglass
DESCRIPTION:As a part of our Civic Season programming\, the ABHM Book Club will be discussing Great Speeches By Frederick Douglass on June 20th at 6 PM via Zoom. \nAuthor\, abolitionist\, political activist\, and philosopher\, Frederick Douglass was a pivotal figure in the decades of struggle leading up to the Civil War and the Reconstruction era. This inexpensive compilation of his speeches adds vital detail to the portrait of a great historical figure. \nFeatured addresses include “What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?” which was delivered on July 5\, 1852\, more than ten years before the Emancipation Proclamation. “Had I the ability\, and could reach the nation’s ear\, I would\, today\, pour out a fiery stream of biting ridicule\, blasting reproach\, withering sarcasm\, and stern rebuke\,” Douglass assured his listeners\, “For it is not light that is needed\, but fire; it is not the gentle shower\, but thunder. We need the storm\, the whirlwind\, and the earthquake.” Other eloquent and dramatic orations include “Self-Made Men\,” first delivered in 1859\, which defines the principles behind individual success\, and “The Church and Prejudice\,” delivered at the Plymouth County Anti-Slavery Society in 1841.

DESCRIPTION:You might know that Wyoming is The Equality State\, but do you know the history behind it? In 1869 Wyoming made history as the first U.S. territory to give women the right to vote. Fifty-one years later\, the nation followed Wyoming’s lead. \nJoin us for the perfect pairing of pizza and history with Kylie McCormick\, a young historian who loves snooping into the past to uncover meaningful stories. We’ll kick off the evening with a bit of trivia\, where you’ll have a chance to compete for a $50 gift card! Then\, you’ll settle in with some pizza and soda while Kylie tells the story of Women’s Suffrage in Wyoming. \nKylie McCormick was born and raised in Casper\, then studied in Roanoke\, Virginia; Berlin\, Germany; London\, England; and Lincoln\, Nebraska. She holds two Bachelor of Arts degrees\, Summa Cum Laude from Hollins University and a Master of Arts degree in history from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Kylie uses her research to teach classes with the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Casper College\, as well as give public presentations on Wyoming history. \nAll attendees who register and attend the event will be entered for a chance to win a $50 gift card.
