SUMMARY:Smithsonian Secretaries: 175 Years of Challenges and Achievements
DESCRIPTION:In its 175-year history\, the Smithsonian Institution has had just 14 secretaries. Who were these men (yes\, all were men) and how did they interpret founder James Smithson’s mandate for the increase and diffusion of knowledge? What challenges have they had to overcome or accept? \nHistorian Pamela Henson of Smithsonian Libraries and Archives\, who specializes in the Smithsonian’s institutional history\, focuses on five leaders who have left the largest imprints. \nIn 1846\, Joseph Henry\, a Princeton physics professor\, was elected the institution’s first secretary. He held the post for 32 years—the longest of any Smithsonian leader. Notable achievements of Spencer Baird (1878–1887) include the creation of the U.S. National Museum\, Astrophysical Observatory\, and the National Zoo. Alexander Wetmore (1945–1954) guided the institution through World War II and brought in the National Air and Space Museum and Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute. S. Dillon Ripley (1964–1984) added new museums\, new research institutes\, and cultural heritage centers\, some far from Washington\, D.C.\, and changed the composition of the staff to include women and minorities in positions of authority. (Ripley can also be thanked for the creation of the Smithsonian Associates.) \nHenson concludes with a look at Lonnie G. Bunch III\, the current—and first African American—secretary\, and how he is shaping the future of the institution\, which holds two new museums: the National Museum of the American Latino and the Smithsonian American Women’s History Museum. \nJoin Henson as she traces the stories of these leaders\, who guided the Smithsonian’s growth from its beginnings in the Castle to its present international scope encompassing 21 museums with holdings of 155 million objects\, a world-class zoo\, 8 research institutes\, 3 cultural centers\, and an ever-expanding educational mission.

SUMMARY:North Carolina Special Edition: Durham Royal Ice Cream Parlor Sit-In
DESCRIPTION:Speakers: Mrs. Mary Clyburn Hooks and Ms. Virginia Williams \nOn June 23\, 1957\, Rev. Douglas Moore of Asbury Temple Methodist Church led six young African Americans into Durham’s segregated Royal Ice Cream Parlor. The group entered the “Colored” entrance at the back of the restaurant and proceeded to the White section\, where they sat down and ordered ice cream. Denied service\, the protestors refused to leave. They were arrested and fined $10\, plus court fees. The Royal Ice Cream sit-in provoked controversy in not only the White community; it created a huge uproar among Black citizens\, many of whose members viewed the protesters not as freedom fighters but as troublemakers. Although the sit-in did not receive a lot of support\, it did help inspire future protests\, including the Greensboro F. W. Woolworth store lunch-counter sit-ins. Join us on the 65th anniversary of the Royal Ice Cream Parlor sit-in\, as two of the protestors share their memories of that historic day. \nMary Clyburn Hooks is a native of Monroe\, North Carolina. As a young woman\, she moved to Durham\, hoping to acquire an education and work in a more progressive town. After participating in the sit-in\, Hooks married and started a family. She attended North Carolina College at Durham (now North Carolina Central University)\, before settling in New Jersey. Virginia Williams came to Durham from her home in rural Northampton County\, seeking employment. After attending a political meeting\, the two young women felt compelled to take part in the upcoming protest. Following the events at the Royal Ice Cream Parlor\, Williams participated in other Durham demonstrations. She retired from a long career in food services and still resides in Durham.

DESCRIPTION:Every president is the central player in the drama called America\, and it’s increasingly crucial for presidents to generate a positive image in popular culture. But the respect and even reverence that once surrounded the presidency have seriously eroded\, replaced by skepticism\, cynicism\, and often ridicule\, making governing all the more difficult. \nVeteran White House correspondent\, historian\, and author Ken Walsh presents an overview of how the presidency and presidents\, both real and fictional\, are portrayed in the movies\, news media\, social media\, and on television entertainment programs such as “Saturday Night Live\,” late-night talk shows\, and “The West Wing.” \nWalsh looks at how the presidents who are portrayed the most positively in popular culture—who participate in and understand it—sometimes can bond strongly with the public and are the most effective leaders. Of course\, some fail\, and he also turns his eye to them. Among the presidents in the pop culture spotlight are Franklin D. Roosevelt\, John F. Kennedy\, Richard Nixon\, Ronald Reagan\, Bill Clinton\, George W. Bush\, Barack Obama\, Donald Trump\, and Joe Biden.

Originating in Galveston\, Texas\, it has been celebrated annually on June 19 in various parts of the United States since 1865. \nWhile Juneteenth is officially on June 19th\, the observed Federal\, state\, and local holiday is Monday\, June 20th this year. \nMeet us at the historic Paschal’s\, a Black-owned Atlanta icon complete with a rich history from six decades featuring signature soul food dishes and brush up on your Juneteenth history and knowledge before the lunch so you can play our trivia game. \nPlease note that while RSVP’s are free\, lunch will be purchased individually by attendees. DESCRIPTION:In-person\, in the Nan Tucker McEvoy Auditorium at the National Portrait Gallery \nQueer identity and disability – how can portraits help us understand these themes? Join a conversation with artist and educator Riva Lehrer and Cuban American writer Achy Obejas. Obejas was the subject of Lehrer’s piece that was a finalist in the Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition and is now on view in “The Outwin 2022: American Portraiture Today.” \nAs a part of the Tommie L. Pegues and Donald A. Capoccia Conversation Series in LGBTQ+ Portraiture\, this event will explore themes related to queer identity and disability. Moderated by the National Portrait Gallery’s curator of painting\, sculpture\, and Latinx art and history Taína Caragol\, and historian Mindy Farmer\, the conversation will also examine Lehrer’s method for creating Obejas’ portrait and the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. \nThe Portrait Gallery strives to provide programs that are accessible to all visitors. SUMMARY:Freedom on Paper: An Exhibition of “Free Negro Registers” from the Virginia Untold Project
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of Juneteenth\, the holiday that commemorates the ending of slavery in the United States\, visitors to the Library of Virginia will have the rare opportunity to view a selection of “Free Negro Registers” displayed in the lobby and to learn about the Library’s efforts to digitize\, preserve\, and make them more accessible. These records demonstrate Virginia’s efforts to control and regulate its growing free Black population from the late 18th century to the Civil War. The registers provide the names\, ages\, and physical descriptions of free Black and multiracial individuals who were required to register in their Virginia locality. \nLydia Neuroth\, project manager for Virginia Untold\, will be on hand to discuss the records and answer questions. The Virginia Untold project provides digital access to collections from Virginia localities relating to enslaved and free Black individuals prior to 1866. \nThe exhibition of records runs through Monday\, June 27\, 2022. \n\n

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a dynamic live reading of Saida Agostini’s poetry collection STUNT (2020)\, a reimagining of the life of Nellie Jackson\, an early twentieth century brothel owner\, freedom fighter\, and entrepreneur. \nLiterary maven Lisa Pegram will lead the reading\, which will also feature Agostini and performing artists Holly Bass\, Dehejia Maat\, Maryam Fatima Foye\, and Melani Douglass. The reading will be followed by a conversation with the author about the book and its themes\, and then a Q&A session. Images from NMWA’s collection that represent themes from STUNT will also be interspersed throughout the program. \nThis book discussion series\, presented by the museum‘s public programs and Betty Boyd Dettre Library and Research Center teams. \nAbout STUNT:\nWhat does it mean to know the interior lives of Black women? STUNT imagines scenes from the life of Nellie Jackson. Born in 1902\, Miss Nellie ran a brothel in Natchez\, Mississippi for sixty years until her death in 1990. A freedom fighter and entrepreneur who spied on the KKK and supported civil rights activists\, Nellie Jackson is a legend that troubles our notions of Black narratives and histories. By turns jubilant\, sensual and violent\, STUNT imagines Nellie as a woman who revels in her Blackness\, power and creation.

DESCRIPTION:Gentle Thursday@Localmotion is a festival on the Depot Green in Downtown Muskogee that is designed to engage young people and their families in civics investigations. On the Depot Green people can play lawn games\, enjoy food trucks\, and live music while also participating in voting simulation and chalk-the-block type activities. An art show highlighting the questions\, “What does America mean to you\,” “How do you show your patriotism\,” “Why should we vote\,” or “How do you engage with our democracy?” will be held at a coffee bar located at the Green. People’s Choice art awards will be given at the end of the evening. We will also have a special exhibit at Three Rivers Museum.
