SUMMARY:Instructions to All Persons: CWRIC Hearings Excerpts
DESCRIPTION:In 1981\, the Commission on Wartime Relocation and Internment of Civilians (CWRIC) heard the testimonies of Japanese Americans across the country who spoke out for the first time about this incarceration during World War II. Recognizing the historic nature of these hearings\, Nikkei for Civil Rights and Redress (NCRR\, then known as the National Coalition for Redress/ Reparations) and Visual Communications (VC) collaborated to videotape the Los Angeles hearings. \nThese clips from those hearings were highlighted as part of a 2017 exhibition at JANM titled “Instructions to All Persons: Reflections on Executive Order 9066.”

SUMMARY:Jasmine Cho’s Portraits in Icing
DESCRIPTION:The Heinz History Center’s past exhibition\, Smithsonian’s Portraits of Pittsburgh: Works from the National Portrait Gallery\, reminded us of the remarkable national impact of people whose lives have intersected with this region. But the exhibition also challenges us to recognize the gaps in this legacy. Too many faces and stories still lack representation in contemporary museum collections. This is especially true for portraiture\, a type of art that by its very nature was immersed in issues of power and status. Why do some stories predominate while others are missing in these spaces and collections\, primarily the legacies of women and people of color? How can we broaden definitions of American achievement today and ensure that a fuller spectrum of stories and people are represented?

SUMMARY:Richmond Uprising - 1863 and today
DESCRIPTION:In both the Richmond Bread Riot of 1863 and the ongoing protests against police brutality\, we hear the voice of people who suffer from inequitable systems – in 1863\, it was food distribution and inflation; now\, it is systemic racism in the law enforcement and criminal justice system. Though not the same\, placing the two protests side-by-side suggests enduring questions about protesting in America. Why are people compelled to do it? What happens when those in authority do not listen to the cries of their citizens? Is there a legitimate or illegitimate way to protest? What kind of solutions can protestors force authorities to concede\, if any? Join us in thinking about these questions in this virtual exhibit.

SUMMARY:9066 to 9/11
DESCRIPTION:“9066 to 9/11” focuses on the parallels between the post-September 11 treatment of Arab Americans and Muslims in this country with treatment of Japanese Americans after the start of World War II. Revealing striking similarities\, the film addresses the mistreatment of immigrants in the United States\, as well as the lack of historical memory by lawmakers and the public about America’s concentration camps during World War II.

SUMMARY:The Independence of Poe: A Declaration of a Different Sort
DESCRIPTION:In 1826\, one of America’s Founding Fathers crossed paths with one of the new nation’s defining writers when University of Virginia student Edgar Allan Poe attended Thomas Jefferson’s funeral. Just as Jefferson had declared the nation’s political\, religious\, and architectural independence from England\, the young Poe would soon issue America’s Declaration of Literary and Artistic Independence. But how did Poe define American literature at a time when the young nation was still trying to define itself? Join the Poe Museum’s curator Chris Semtner for a discussion of the ways Poe’s time in Albemarle County inspired him to break American literature free of its dependence upon European models and values. This will be a virtual program\, June 29 at 6pm EDT.
