SUMMARY:Community Healing: "Making and Mending" - Conversation about Art and Disability
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a moderated community conversation exploring how artists of South Asia and the diaspora navigate careers at the intersection of art and disability. This event invites participants into a community-building experience that highlights the resilience of artists with disabilities working in creative fields that are often not designed with accessibility in mind. Together\, we will engage in critical reflection and discuss how humanities-based institutions can lead the way in fostering more inclusive and accessible spaces. \nThe conversation will be moderated by Anand Venkatkrishnan\, an intellectual historian of South Asian religion and author of Love in the Time of Scholarship: The Bhāgavata Purāṇa in Indian Intellectual History. \nFeatured speakers include: \nPooja Pittie\, a Chicago-based visual artist living with a progressive form of muscular dystrophy\, whose work explores the tension between a slowing body and an active\, curious mind. \nGrishma Shah\, a self-taught painter and public health professional whose experience with a physical disability inspires her art and advocacy for disability as a valued identity. \nPriya Rama\, an Ohio-based artist who channels chronic migraines into vivid\, expressive work\, encouraging creativity as a response to chronic pain and stress. \nASL interpretation and online participation options will be available. Please register to receive a zoom link morning of the event. Mask-wearing is strongly encouraged in person. \nThis program is supported by a Healing IL grant from the Field Foundation and Illinois Humanities.

SUMMARY:Why America Needs Service\, Now More Than Ever
DESCRIPTION:COVID-19 and the fallout from the 2020 election have exposed the fragility of American democratic institutions and the importance of rebuilding the nation’s civic culture. Should there be a universal expectation of national service for youth? What role should national service play in repairing American democracy and in helping the nation emerge from the pandemic? The conversation examines how service can bring Americans out of their political bubbles and mend some of the inequities exposed by COVID-19. In collaboration with Service Year Alliance.

SUMMARY:Host Your Own “Feast of Reason” Convo
DESCRIPTION:Whether you’re gathering for Juneteenth or July 4th\, on a picnic or a BBQ\, Thanksgiving isn’t the only time of year you can entertain a debate over a meal. And there’s no better time to get some support for having better conversations that widen the lens on how we understand our past\, present and future. When Thomas Jefferson convened people around the dinner table for debates and discussions\, the United States wasn’t an idea everyone agreed upon – and as an enslaver advocating for independence\, he brought his own contradictions to the table. Nearly 250 years later\, we’re still wrestling with who we’ll become as a nation\, as a society\, as a world – in coffee shops and around the kitchen table. Made By Us founding partner\, Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello\, has you covered with their Feast of Reason conversation card deck that helps you navigate the strong opinions many of us hold about “civic issues” so that breaking bread together can bring us closer. Download the cards and get ready to savor a great discussion!

SUMMARY:Holocaust and America's Response to Other Genocides
DESCRIPTION:A resource developed in partnership with the Library of Congress\, these materials look at the issue of genocide.\nFollowing its defeat in World War I and the punitive peace treaty that followed\, Germany fell into a deep and extended economic depression. Nationalist leaders found a willing audience when they looked for scapegoats who could be blamed for the country’s troubles. Adolf Hitler’s National Socialist Party claimed that the Jewish people were traitors during the war and a blight on the nation. Hitler claimed that the Aryan race (northern Europeans) were genetically superior to all others and that the Jews were inferior. When he rose to power in the early 1930s\, he began to impose punitive policies to punish and shame the Jews.\nWhile America knew about pre-war Nazi discrimination against the Jews\, it did little to protest or demand an end to it. There was a heated debate in the nation about American involvement in or isolation from European disputes. The U.S. refused to expand its immigration policies to accept more Jews fleeing from Nazi persecution. \nReflect on the following questions:\nWhat was the Holocaust?\nHow did America respond to the Holocaust?\nHow has America responded to other genocides?
