DESCRIPTION:Artwork created by youth\, for youth\, Resistance At Home is the culminating exhibition of artwork created by YouthCAN artists meditating on meanings of home and collective struggle. \nExplore identity and culture through art with the limited time exhibit at Wing Luke Museum. With a wide lens\, Resistance at Home seeks to uncover the ways in which we resist the US empire’s white supremacy\, queerphobia\, patriarchy\, and racial capitalism while situated in the belly of the beast. On a personal level\, Resistance at Home explores how we can take action in our own lives\, interrogate notions of home\, and recognize the personal as political. \nFrom Filipino labor organizing in the 20th century to contemporary gentrification in the Chinatown International District (CID)\, students explored the varied histories of Asian American\, Native Hawaiian\, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) resistance. \nYouthCAN is the Wing Luke Museum’s free art program for anyone aged 13-19 of all levels of artistic experience.

DESCRIPTION:What if an African child in 1756 had Instagram when he was enslaved? \n Equiano.stories reimagines the historic childhood saga of Olaudah Equiano. The epic story is captured as a self-recorded\, first-person account\, within the format of Instagram Stories\, using video\, still images\, and text. Equiano.stories presents the early life of one of the most dynamic figures in history\, through modern technology that enables global viewing\, via social media. \nThe film focuses on the heart and soul of Equiano’s family and community in the Igboland village of Essaka\, then moves through the disruption resulting from the violent kidnapping that trapped him in chattel slavery. This true story reveals the strength\, tenacity\, and resistance of African people during the Middle Passage\, captured on a ship\, headed to the New World. \nEquiano is our origin story which does not begin in enslavement. It begins in FREEDOM. \nA joint feature film project by Stelo Stories Studio and the DuSable Black History Museum and Education Center.

The conversation between Dennis and Anna will be moderated by Margi Hofer\, senior vice president and Museum director\, who frequently does genealogy research to tell a fuller story of the art and artifacts in New-York Historical’s collection. This program is part of Civic Season\, an annual that takes place from Juneteenth to July 4 and invites visitors to commemorate the rich\, complex history of the American experiment through a wide range of exhibition displays and programs.

DESCRIPTION:Join our “People Passage Place: Stories of the Ohio Valley” exhibit team for an intimate and exploratory gallery viewing experience. This exhibit has been separated into three thematic sections to explore multifaceted perspectives on our region: Land Labor Water\, People Family Community\, and Culture Creativity Craft. \nParticipants will meet with a curator between 1:30 and 2 pm to discuss topics including: behind-the-scenes info and details about the exhibit’s development\, design\, and installation; the curatorial process and how the objects were chosen; further details about the stories presented; and how the community was involved in this project. Following the Gallery Chat\, participants will have the option to take the a guided campus tour to learn more about the Filson Historical Society and the historic campus we call home!

SUMMARY:Up Stairs Lounge Fire 50th Anniversary Commemoration Weekend
DESCRIPTION:In its heyday\, the Up Stairs Lounge was an egalitarian gay space that functioned\, in many ways\, as a forerunner to modern queer safe havens. From October 1970 to June 1973\, the bar toasted Black as well as white gay customers in an era of brazen racial discrimination on nearby Bourbon Street. We will gather at this summit to mark half a century since the destruction of the Up Stairs Lounge and to preserve the memory of what occurred. We will consider what progress has been made since that time period and also how far we have to go. We will join in dialogue to contend with the newly resurgent\, international awareness of this once-neglected past. Lastly\, we will recognize and eulogize the lives of the 31 men and one woman who perished on a random Sunday through no choice or fault of their own. \nKick-off the Up Stairs Lounge Fire 50th Anniversary Commemoration Weekend at The Historic New Orleans Collection. In the Keynote Speech\, authors Johnny Townsend\, Robert Fieseler\, and Clayton Delery will discuss the tragedy and its complex legacy. The keynote will be followed by a community reception.
