SUMMARY:Reading Frederick Douglass Together

Part of the statewide Reading Frederick Douglass Together initiative\, this event invites participants of all ages to reflect on the meaning of freedom\, justice\, and civic responsibility in both the past and present. Together\, we’ll honor those whose voices were silenced and engage in a dialogue that remains as urgent today as it was in Douglass’s time. SUMMARY:Bound with PRIDE: A Panel Discussion
DESCRIPTION:As part of the HBC’s 53rd Annual Members’ Exhibition\, book artists were given a unique opportunity to create original works using sections of a donated Gilbert Baker Rainbow Flag that once flew over Harvey Milk Plaza in San Francisco’s historic Castro district in which the flag was first created. \nSlippery\, synthetic\, and stubborn\, the fabric resisted precision—fraying\, warping\, and pushing back at every turn. Much like the queer identities and experiences it represents\, it demanded care\, patience\, and persistence. \nJoin us for a panel discussion exploring the resulting works: a spectrum of interpretations that reflect the challenges\, beauty\, and meaning embedded in the flag and the hands that shaped it. Meet some of the artists\, learn about their processes\, and hear about some of the challenges they encountered turning their vision into a book.
