SUMMARY:Masters of Modern Design: Art of the Japanese American Experience
DESCRIPTION:From the hand-drawn typeface on the book cover of The Godfather to Herman Miller’s biomorphic coffee table\, the work of Japanese American artists/designers including Ruth Asawa\, George Nakashima\, Isamu Noguchi\, S. Neil Fujita\, and Gyo Obata permeated American postwar culture. While these second generation Japanese American artists have been celebrated\, less-discussed is the powerful effect their World War II incarceration—a period of intense hardship and discrimination—had on their lives and art. \nThis documentary\, a co-production between JANM’s Watase Media Arts Center and KCET for the series ARTBOUND\, explores the ways in which their camp experiences impacted their existence\, influenced their art\, and sent them on trajectories that eventually led to their changing the face of American culture with their immense talents. \nThis film was awarded a Los Angeles area Emmy for the Arts.

SUMMARY:Instructions to All Persons: CWRIC Hearings Excerpts
DESCRIPTION:In 1981\, the Commission on Wartime Relocation and Internment of Civilians (CWRIC) heard the testimonies of Japanese Americans across the country who spoke out for the first time about this incarceration during World War II. Recognizing the historic nature of these hearings\, Nikkei for Civil Rights and Redress (NCRR\, then known as the National Coalition for Redress/ Reparations) and Visual Communications (VC) collaborated to videotape the Los Angeles hearings. \nThese clips from those hearings were highlighted as part of a 2017 exhibition at JANM titled “Instructions to All Persons: Reflections on Executive Order 9066.”

SUMMARY:9066 to 9/11
DESCRIPTION:“9066 to 9/11” focuses on the parallels between the post-September 11 treatment of Arab Americans and Muslims in this country with treatment of Japanese Americans after the start of World War II. Revealing striking similarities\, the film addresses the mistreatment of immigrants in the United States\, as well as the lack of historical memory by lawmakers and the public about America’s concentration camps during World War II.

SUMMARY:Amanda Gorman: Civic Futurist?

Her recitation of her original poem “The Hill We Climb” was arguably one of the most memorable and moving portions of the ceremony\, and talk of her talent and poise have taken over the internet in the days since. \nShe is a force of nature\, a voice for our time — and\, whether she knows it or not\, a civic futurist.

SUMMARY:The Color of Law: A Forgotten History of How Our Government Segregated America
DESCRIPTION:Listen in as Richard Rothstein and Lila Corwin Berman discuss contemporary racial segregation across the United States. The panelists will dig into the history of public housing projects\, suburbanization\, and the actions of the federal housing administration and then interrogate the racial segregation and income gap in America today as a byproduct of explicit government policies at the local\, state and federal levels. Touching on the negative effects of these policies on African Americans and the United States as a whole\, Rothstein and Berman will address how Jewish Americans specifically benefited from and suffered as a result of these policies.

SUMMARY:Reckoning with Organizational History
DESCRIPTION:Over the last few years\, organizations across the United States—including corporations\, universities\, and nonprofits like the American Academy of Arts & Sciences— have begun to reflect on their ties to slavery\, Native genocide\, and other troubling elements of American history. Please join us for a program on why historical self-examination matters and what can be gained from studies of the past. We will hear from leaders of a diverse group of institutions about the reckoning process\, best practices that other organizations can use\, and how this work can create opportunities for a better future. \n\n\n\nThe discussion will highlight Telling Our Nation’s Story\, one of 31 recommendations in Our Common Purpose\, the final report from the American Academy’s Commission on the Practice of Democratic Citizenship. This recommendation encourages honest conversations that bridge divides and help develop new narratives that incorporate all aspects of our history. \n\n\n\nJune 14th\, 4:00 – 5:30 p.m. EDT // Registration required \n\n\n\nA Morton L. Mandel Public Lecture
