DESCRIPTION:With the support of the National Endowment for the Humanities and donations from over one hundred people and organizations\, Clio is a free platform designed to help organizations create and share walking tours and thematic trails that connect people to nearby history\, art\, and other topics. There are now over 1400 walking tours in Clio and the free website and mobile application will also guide the public to a growing library of over 35\,000 landmarks throughout the United States. There are also virtual tours of museums and sites\, interpretive nature trails that connect people to human and natural history\, and thematic trails. Each month\, organizations like historical societies\, museums\, libraries\, and universities publish dozens of new trails and tours that can include audio narration\, images\, text\, and links to related primary and secondary sources. Clio is a small non-profit organization sustained by an active volunteer community dedicated to connecting the public to nearby history\, art\, and culture.

The exhibit was created in conjunction with The Dover Library’s University Archives at Gardner Webb University and The Earl Scruggs Center. \nBound by Faith: The Bibles of Cleveland County offers visitors a look at some of the Bibles that were owned by Cleveland County residents and some of the interesting ways in which they were used in the secular world of the 19th and 20th centuries. This exhibit features several Bibles which include The O. Max Gardner Inaugural Bible\, The O.M. Mull Inaugural Bible\, a 1648 Field Bible\, and many others. DESCRIPTION:The new graphic novel\, “We Hereby Refuse: Japanese American Resistance to Wartime Incarceration\,” presents an original vision of America’s past with disturbing links to the American present. Through the distinct but interconnected stories of Jim Akutsu\, Hiroshi Kashiwagi\, and Mitsuye Endo\, three Japanese Americans who resisted imprisonment in American concentration camps during WWII\, We Hereby Refuse exposes the often untold stories of the camp experience. \nOn June 26\, 2021\, writers Frank Abe and Tamiko Nimura came together for a conversation and reading of their graphic novel. They were joined by artist Ross Ishikawa to talk about his process recreating Japanese American history with 3-D modeling and YURI Education Project creators who shared the free online resources that accompany the book. The conversation was moderated by Dr. Kelly Fong\, Professor of Asian American Studies at UCLA.

DESCRIPTION:Don’t miss an exciting new conversation about “Setsuko’s Secret: Heart Mountain and the Legacy of the Japanese American Incarceration.” On October 21\, 2021\, Author Shirley Ann Higuchi\, J.D.\, chair of the Heart Mountain Wyoming Foundation\, shared her painful transformational journey uncovering and writing about her family’s history and the Japanese American incarceration during World War II. Higuchi was joined by former child incarcerees\, Sam Mihara and “Mr. Heart Mountain\,” Bacon Sakatani who shared their own firsthand remembrances of the Heart Mountain incarceration site and how as adults\, they came to terms with the reality that Heart Mountain was a US government prison. Doug Nelson\, vice chair of the Heart Mountain Wyoming Foundation and Dakota Russell\, Executive Director\, joined them for closing remarks on how these stories have inspired the current work of the Heart Mountain Wyoming Foundation.

Then\, writer Sharon Yamato\, actor Kurt Kanazawa\, and Nonny de la Peña (Emblematic Group) talked about the process of developing the immersive virtual reality experience of “A Life in Pieces: The Diary and Letters of Stanley Hayami.” \nThis program was presented live at JANM’s Tateuchi Democracy Forum and also livestreamed as part of the JACSC 2021 Education Conference\, Stronger Together: Voices to Inspire\, Advocate\, and Educate.

DESCRIPTION:The National Museum of Women in the Arts (NMWA) presents RECLAMATION: Recipes\, Remedies\, and Rituals\, a new participatory exhibition featuring nine interdisciplinary artists. Conceived as a virtual experience that recontextualizes the traditional role of women in providing sustenance and healing\, RECLAMATION also features content submitted by the public\, interwoven with the artists’ work. \nRECLAMATION is an evolving exhibition and ingredient archive that examines food as a creative medium for visual art and a connective tool for exploring intergenerational and intercultural experiences. \nThe exhibition centers around a kitchen table\, the central domestic object for gatherings of family and friends. Nine artists will activate their own kitchen tables\, sharing photographs\, videos and stories about how they use this domestic object. These intimate glimpses into the artists’ homes simultaneously reveal a work of art and the process by which it is made. \nThrough a digital ingredient archive\, developed in partnership with the Family Arts Museum and Ten-Fifteen Media\, online visitors can participate in the exhibition by sharing recipes\, anecdotes\, photos and reflections related to food. Submissions will be layered with the artists’ work\, creating a dynamic portal for exploring the interconnectedness of food and the communal nature of nourishing and curing the body. In this way\, both artists and viewers will use those materials to honor women’s roles in the practices and traditions surrounding food. \nThe exhibition also features interviews and content from the Curative Collective\, a group of partners that focus on food—from advocacy and social justice work\, to healing and restorative self-care. These organizations help ensure that the exhibition reflects and serves their communities while sharing their arts and social change resources with NMWA’s audience. Examples of Curative Collective organizations are Black Magick Sisters\, Dreaming Out Loud\, Mutual Aid Apothecary\, and STRŌB Apothecary\, among others.

SUMMARY:THE SANDERS-BULLITT FAMILY PAPERS
DESCRIPTION:A reworking of the Bullitt family papers to highlight the people enslaved by the Bullitt family on the Oxmoor plantation and the Cottonwood plantation from the late eighteenth century to the early twentieth century. One of these families includes the Sanders family\, headed by Eliza Sanders and her husband\, Jim Sanders. While not all people enslaved by the Bullitt family were tied by blood to the Sanders family\, the digitization and exhibition of these sources aim to recognize all of the people and families enslaved by the Bullitt family and bring academic attention to the complex community they fostered among each other while in bondage. DESCRIPTION:The History Film Forum is a monthly online series from the Smithsonian that explores history on the screen and the evolution of film as public history. The Forum returned in 2021 with the new documentary MLK/FBI\, which explores the US government’s history of targeting Black activists and the contested meaning behind some of our most cherished ideals. Based on newly discovered and declassified files\, the film tells the tragic story of the FBI’s surveillance and harassment of Martin Luther King\, Jr. Emmy Award winning director Sam Pollard and former field secretary of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee Larry Rubin\, in conversation with Christopher Wilson\, the History Film Forum’s executive director and curator\, examined the making of MLK/FBI and the pertinent issues it spotlights. \nThis program was made possible through the generous support of Dan Manatt and Democracy Films.

SUMMARY:Summer Educator Institute in Cincinnati
DESCRIPTION:We are participating in the Civic Season ideal by offering a free 4-day workshop to educators in the Greater Cincinnati area.  Participants will experience some of our current field trip offerings first-hand\, showcasing different grade levels\, engage in discussion with museum educators on teaching “hard history” topics\, and collaborate with K-12 colleagues. \nDays 1\, 2\, and 4 will take place at the Harriet Beecher Stowe House.  Day 3 will take place in Ripley\, OH (about a 1-hour drive from Walnut Hills – carpooling may be available).  Workshop sessions are free to participants and open to K-12 educators\, as well as pre-service teachers.  Books and materials are included.  Funding is made possible through the Ohio Humanities Council.  We are currently seeking funding for lunches as well. \nSessions will run 9:30 – 3:30 each day – Monday June 20 – Thursday June 23. The AirSpace podcast explores how flight impacts our lives — from newsworthy discoveries that expand our understanding of the universe to the history of that airline safety video you watch every time you fly. For QueerSpace\, we’re highlighting how queer culture has shaped what aerospace is and can be — from the building of a supportive and welcoming community of flight attendants in the 1970s to the imagined worlds of sci-fi challenging our binary perceptions. Any of these stories would be at home in a regular AirSpace season\, but we’re putting them together in a limited series to highlight the scope and diversity of queer experiences found across human flight and space science.

How can we create environments that are healthy for everyone? is a freely available community research guide developed by the Smithsonian Science Education Center (SSEC) in partnership with the InterAcademy Partnership as part of the Smithsonian Science for Global Goals project. \nThe Environmental Justice! guide helps young people learn more about the concerns of their community in order to communicate accurate\, helpful\, and trusted information about environmental justice. \nEnvironmental Justice! features 8 tasks that incorporate investigations and hands-on science to help students discover\, understand\, and take action. Students learn about how they interact with their environment; research environmental justice throughout history; learn about a specific environmental issue in their area and the causes of this problem; examine how different environments can make people more or less healthy; discover the themes of injustices; learn more to understand some innovative solutions to environmental problems; and develop an action plan for their communities.

DESCRIPTION:Artwork created by youth\, for youth\, Resistance At Home is the culminating exhibition of artwork created by YouthCAN artists meditating on meanings of home and collective struggle. \nExplore identity and culture through art with the limited time exhibit at Wing Luke Museum. With a wide lens\, Resistance at Home seeks to uncover the ways in which we resist the US empire’s white supremacy\, queerphobia\, patriarchy\, and racial capitalism while situated in the belly of the beast. On a personal level\, Resistance at Home explores how we can take action in our own lives\, interrogate notions of home\, and recognize the personal as political. \nFrom Filipino labor organizing in the 20th century to contemporary gentrification in the Chinatown International District (CID)\, students explored the varied histories of Asian American\, Native Hawaiian\, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) resistance. \nYouthCAN is the Wing Luke Museum’s free art program for anyone aged 13-19 of all levels of artistic experience.

SUMMARY:Smithsonian Secretaries: 175 Years of Challenges and Achievements
DESCRIPTION:In its 175-year history\, the Smithsonian Institution has had just 14 secretaries. Who were these men (yes\, all were men) and how did they interpret founder James Smithson’s mandate for the increase and diffusion of knowledge? What challenges have they had to overcome or accept? \nHistorian Pamela Henson of Smithsonian Libraries and Archives\, who specializes in the Smithsonian’s institutional history\, focuses on five leaders who have left the largest imprints. \nIn 1846\, Joseph Henry\, a Princeton physics professor\, was elected the institution’s first secretary. He held the post for 32 years—the longest of any Smithsonian leader. Notable achievements of Spencer Baird (1878–1887) include the creation of the U.S. National Museum\, Astrophysical Observatory\, and the National Zoo. Alexander Wetmore (1945–1954) guided the institution through World War II and brought in the National Air and Space Museum and Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute. S. Dillon Ripley (1964–1984) added new museums\, new research institutes\, and cultural heritage centers\, some far from Washington\, D.C.\, and changed the composition of the staff to include women and minorities in positions of authority. (Ripley can also be thanked for the creation of the Smithsonian Associates.) \nHenson concludes with a look at Lonnie G. Bunch III\, the current—and first African American—secretary\, and how he is shaping the future of the institution\, which holds two new museums: the National Museum of the American Latino and the Smithsonian American Women’s History Museum. \nJoin Henson as she traces the stories of these leaders\, who guided the Smithsonian’s growth from its beginnings in the Castle to its present international scope encompassing 21 museums with holdings of 155 million objects\, a world-class zoo\, 8 research institutes\, 3 cultural centers\, and an ever-expanding educational mission.
