SUMMARY:Civic Imagination Workshops
DESCRIPTION:To realize the full potential of our communities\, build on our past\, and chart paths forward\, we need to be able to imagine what better worlds look like… even now\, especially now. Responding to this imperative\, the Civic Imagination Project activates memory and people’s visions for what a better tomorrow might look like as a necessary step to connecting with others and taking action to achieve real-world goals. Over the last 7 years\, our project team has built tools with people from all over the world\, helping them build action plans to realize imagined solutions. Our workshops enable individuals and communities as they think creatively\, connect with others in new ways\, and tackle challenging issues with imagination.

SUMMARY:American Music Landmarks Project
DESCRIPTION:During Civic Season and beyond\, the American Music Landmarks Project (AMLP) seeks to help young music fans everywhere find unique opportunities to explore and be inspired by places that defined their favorite artists and genres as well as those they have yet to discover. Our new millennial-founded organization is excited to assist young Americans in adding their voices as present and future stewards of our music history’s architectural legacy through connecting them with virtual and on-site tours\, special events and volunteer experiences to meaningfully participate in the ongoing preservation\, maintenance and interpretation of music landmarks. The AMLP understands that the presence of youth in transforming our music landmarks from built history to built heritage is essential to further democratizing and diversifying public awareness\, appreciation and support for the places that tell the story of our collective musical past. Reach out at info@musiclandmarks.org and let us help you identify an opportunity with a music landmark this Civic Season!

SUMMARY:Resistance at Home Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:Artwork created by youth\, for youth\, Resistance At Home is the culminating exhibition of artwork created by YouthCAN artists meditating on meanings of home and collective struggle. \nExplore identity and culture through art with the limited time exhibit at Wing Luke Museum. With a wide lens\, Resistance at Home seeks to uncover the ways in which we resist the US empire’s white supremacy\, queerphobia\, patriarchy\, and racial capitalism while situated in the belly of the beast. On a personal level\, Resistance at Home explores how we can take action in our own lives\, interrogate notions of home\, and recognize the personal as political. \nFrom Filipino labor organizing in the 20th century to contemporary gentrification in the Chinatown International District (CID)\, students explored the varied histories of Asian American\, Native Hawaiian\, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) resistance. \nYouthCAN is the Wing Luke Museum’s free art program for anyone aged 13-19 of all levels of artistic experience.

SUMMARY:Smithsonian Secretaries: 175 Years of Challenges and Achievements
DESCRIPTION:In its 175-year history\, the Smithsonian Institution has had just 14 secretaries. Who were these men (yes\, all were men) and how did they interpret founder James Smithson’s mandate for the increase and diffusion of knowledge? What challenges have they had to overcome or accept? \nHistorian Pamela Henson of Smithsonian Libraries and Archives\, who specializes in the Smithsonian’s institutional history\, focuses on five leaders who have left the largest imprints. \nIn 1846\, Joseph Henry\, a Princeton physics professor\, was elected the institution’s first secretary. He held the post for 32 years—the longest of any Smithsonian leader. Notable achievements of Spencer Baird (1878–1887) include the creation of the U.S. National Museum\, Astrophysical Observatory\, and the National Zoo. Alexander Wetmore (1945–1954) guided the institution through World War II and brought in the National Air and Space Museum and Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute. S. Dillon Ripley (1964–1984) added new museums\, new research institutes\, and cultural heritage centers\, some far from Washington\, D.C.\, and changed the composition of the staff to include women and minorities in positions of authority. (Ripley can also be thanked for the creation of the Smithsonian Associates.) \nHenson concludes with a look at Lonnie G. Bunch III\, the current—and first African American—secretary\, and how he is shaping the future of the institution\, which holds two new museums: the National Museum of the American Latino and the Smithsonian American Women’s History Museum. \nJoin Henson as she traces the stories of these leaders\, who guided the Smithsonian’s growth from its beginnings in the Castle to its present international scope encompassing 21 museums with holdings of 155 million objects\, a world-class zoo\, 8 research institutes\, 3 cultural centers\, and an ever-expanding educational mission.

SUMMARY:Virtual Session: Los Angeles\, An Emerging Megalopolis
DESCRIPTION:Bill Keene\, a lecturer in history\, urban studies\, and architecture\, examines developments from the 1930s onward that shaped Los Angeles as a magnet for population migration and a major center of industry. \nEmergent airplane manufacturing during the 1930s established the foundation for the explosive growth to meet the demands of WWII. Shipbuilding\, aircraft production\, and other wartime industry enabled Los Angeles to become a leading industrial area in the postwar period. \nDuring the 1930s\, motion pictures and radio became factors in the daily lives of millions. With the development of television\, Hollywood became a presence in most homes\, further enhancing the visions of the Southern California filled with endless sun\, beautiful beaches\, and playgrounds of the glamorous. \nThe postwar boom brought more than a million new residents to Los Angeles alone\, seeking the lifestyle seen in the movies and TV and briefly experienced by the GIs who came through on their way to war and those who came to work in industry supporting the war effort. \nAlong with new population\, new challenges emerged or resurfaced. Air pollution became a major problem\, shadowing Sunny California’s image. Racial tensions grew. The city saw the expulsion of Japanese residents in 1942 and major outbreaks of violence across the decades\, from the Zoot Suit Riots of 1943 to the Los Angeles Riots of 1992\, with racial issues remaining a problem today. \nKeene also traces how during the same period\, Los Angeles emerged on the national and world stages as a major force economically and culturally. That status was reflected in the development of institutions including the County Museum of Art\, the Norton Simon and Getty museums\, and the Music Center (with its Disney Concert Hall)\, and the major-league baseball\, football\, and basketball teams that call it home.

SUMMARY:How Race and Sports Shaped Charlottesville\, VA
DESCRIPTION:The Albemarle Charlottesville Historical Society has launched a major oral history project called “Race & Sports: Athletics and Desegregation in Central Virginia.” This project seeks to collect and preserve the memories of those involved in Central Virginia public school sports during the period of Massive Resistance and desegregation. We are building a database of interviews with Black and White student athletes\, cheerleaders\, school administrators\, teachers\, coaches\, local leaders\, and parents who share their stories of that tumultuous time. Did athletics help to build relationships and understandings across the color line? Or did the “team” only exist on the field of play? Please join us on June 14\, 2022 at 7pm for an update on this ongoing project and hear from two participants who will share some of the stories we have documented.

SUMMARY:Memorials: The Journey to Civil Rights
DESCRIPTION:“We shall overcome because the arc of the moral universe is long\, but it bends toward justice\,” declared Martin Luther King\, Jr. in 1968. By the time you read that quote at the conclusion of this walk you will have encountered the author of the Declaration of Independence\, drafter of the country’s first bill of rights\, the champion of the New Deal and the woman helped author the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. For two weeks each spring the Tidal Basin glows with a pink-white hue of thousands of Japanese cherry trees. Yet once the glory of the blossoms has vanished the memorials around this manmade body of water continue to resonate with the American principles of independence\, equal rights\, and justice. Trace the evolution of the U.S. Civil Rights movement through up-close encounters with Thomas Jefferson Memorial\, George Mason Memorial\, Franklin D. Roosevelt Memorial\, Martin Luther King\, Jr. Memorial plus views of the Washington Monument.

SUMMARY:Warning Signs Videos about Lincoln\, Threats to Democracy\, and Freedom
DESCRIPTION:Warning Signs: Lincoln’s Response to Rising Tensions in the 1850s features four short films that help us understand our present reality. \nExplore different perspectives about an extremely polarized moment in U.S. history and what it reveals about maintaining a healthy democracy today. \nThe films feature three dynamic experts who focus on how polarization before the Civil War affects our current civic lives. \nTogether\, four professors describe Lincoln’s struggle with the morality of slavery and its westward expansion\, the increasingly irreversible political divide\, the character of the Constitution itself\, and the ultimate value and meaning of human equality. \nAfter describing Lincoln’s views on the Constitution\, they tackle questions like: “What does it mean to be a self-governing people? What are the sorts of things we need to think alike about\, where we can differ on policy\, but what are some building blocks of democracy and republicanism and self-government that we need to all share in order to get along?” \nDr. Lucas Morel: \n“For a republic to be viable\, for a republic to last\, for a republic to perpetuate itself\, it has to produce election after election after election. Good winners. And good losers.” \nLearn how Lincoln grappled with the unprecedented crisis facing the republic\, his views on self-government\, and how he saw progress inspired by the Declaration of Independence but bound by the Constitution. \nThe resources are available to the public free of charge and include Spanish-language closed-captions.

SUMMARY:No Playbook - School Integration During Massive Resistance
DESCRIPTION:The story of Virginia’s Massive Resistance to Brown v. Board has been told many times. Most of those treatments focus on the political\, legal\, and educational aspects of desegregation. Often lost in these histories are the personal experiences of those whose lives were most immediately affected—the young people who were the first to cross previously enforced boundaries and charted new social norms. \nAs recently as the 1960s\, most schools in the American South were racially segregated. Resistance to school desegregation in Charlottesville and Albemarle County\, Virginia\, continued for at least a decade more. During that time\, it was not just classrooms that were changing; it was sports teams\, school hallways\, and communities as a whole. The oral histories of dozens of former students\, many of them athletes\, offer first-hand reflections of what it was like during those years of unprecedented change. How did desegregation actually take place when “there was no playbook?” Find out from those who lived it.
