Visitors will learn how Jefferson and Adams became allies in 1776\, bitter rivals in an age of partisanship\, and friends again in retirement. \nBy considering the challenges and triumphs of the American Revolution and the early United States\, this tour reveals how ordinary people became leaders and encourages visitors to consider how a democracy was born through disagreement\, civil discourse\, and dedication to shared values. \nFollowing the tour\, guests will participate in a Feast of Reason on the mountaintop. Named for dinners that Jefferson hosted and known for their good food and interesting conversation\, the Feast of Reason is a new card deck that facilitates conversations on history and democracy over food and drink.

The Rev. Dr. McClendon is a chaplain with the Cheyenne Police Department for the past six years. In 2019\, he started the Sunday morning TV show “Moments of Inspiration” on Fox 27 in Cheyenne. He is a member of the Cheyenne Kiwanis Club and the Greater Cheyenne Chamber of Commerce. The Rev. Dr. McClendon loves to sing\, especially gospel songs\, and has four recordings\, one of which\, “Projection of Love\,” can be found on Spotify. \n● Jim Byrd is a fifth-generation Wyomingite who grew up in Cheyenne and served five terms in the Wyoming Legislature. He served as Minority Whip from 2013 to 2015 and was elected to serve as Minority Caucus Leader in 2015. His mother\, Harriet “Liz” Byrd\, was the first African-American woman in the Wyoming Legislature\, and his grandfather\, Robert “Buck” Rhone\, was in the first graduating class of Cheyenne High School.

DESCRIPTION:Presented as part of the From Slavery to Freedom Film Series\, “American Coup: Wilmington 1898” tells the little-known story of a deadly race massacre and carefully orchestrated insurrection in North Carolina’s largest city in 1898 — the only coup d’état in the history of the US. \nStoking fears of “Negro Rule\,” self-described white supremacists used intimidation and violence to destroy Black political and economic power and overthrow Wilmington’s democratically elected\, multi-racial government. Black residents were murdered and thousands were banished. The story of what happened in Wilmington was suppressed for decades until descendants and scholars began to investigate. Today\, many of those descendants — Black and white — seek the truth about this intentionally buried history. \nFollowing the screening\, award-winning documentarian and director of “American Coup: Wilmington 1898\,” Yoruba Richen will discuss the film. An award-winning filmmaker\, Richen’s work has been featured on multiple outlets\, including Netflix\, MSNBC\, FX\, HBO\, The Atlantic\, and Field of Vision. \nThis program is part of Civic Season a nationwide initiative presented in partnership with the Smithsonian and the History Made By Us coalition. \nCivic Season is a key component of the History Center’s America 101 initiative\, supported by the Nimick Forbesway Foundation and The Grable Foundation.
