SUMMARY:The Wounded World: W.E.B. Du Bois & WWI
DESCRIPTION:Join Black Archives of Mid-America in Kansas City and the Greater Kansas City Black History Study Group for an author discussion of the new book\, The Wounded World: W.E.B. Du Bois & WWI. \nHope\, betrayal\, disillusionment and transformation. W.E.B. Du Bois encouraged African Americans to join the Allied cause in WWI\, but after-the-fact became haunted by this decision. In the effort to atone\, he began a manuscript detailing the history of Black participation in WWI – a manuscript that ultimately remained unfinished. \nProfessor and award-winning author Chad Williams’ new book explores the legacy of Du Bois. As we celebrate Juneteenth\, learn more about the most influential scholar-activist in African American history in this compelling lecture\, hosted in partnership with the Black Archives of Mid-America in Kansas City and the Greater Kansas City Black History Study Group. \nFree with RSVP | Auditorium and Online

SUMMARY:Watch the National Youth Summit on Woman Suffrage: The Ballot and Beyond
DESCRIPTION:Are the tactics used by suffragists to fight for political power still effective? Suffrage and the passage of the 19th Amendment marked an important moment in the progression of women’s participation in our democracy and civic life. Yet it was an imperfect victory\, and one that stands neither as a beginning nor an end\, but as an important milestone in the fight for equality\, justice and representation. The 2019 National Youth Summit looked at woman suffrage as an example of how groups with limited political power have and continue to shape our democracy using strategies and tools\, like the vote and public protest\, to give voice to issues and galvanize fellow Americans into communal movements for change.
