DESCRIPTION:From the hand-drawn typeface on the book cover of The Godfather to Herman Miller’s biomorphic coffee table\, the work of Japanese American artists/designers including Ruth Asawa\, George Nakashima\, Isamu Noguchi\, S. Neil Fujita\, and Gyo Obata permeated American postwar culture. While these second generation Japanese American artists have been celebrated\, less-discussed is the powerful effect their World War II incarceration—a period of intense hardship and discrimination—had on their lives and art. \nThis documentary\, a co-production between JANM’s Watase Media Arts Center and KCET for the series ARTBOUND\, explores the ways in which their camp experiences impacted their existence\, influenced their art\, and sent them on trajectories that eventually led to their changing the face of American culture with their immense talents. \nThis film was awarded a Los Angeles area Emmy for the Arts.

Recognizing the historic nature of these hearings\, Nikkei for Civil Rights and Redress (NCRR\, then known as the National Coalition for Redress/ Reparations) and Visual Communications (VC) collaborated to videotape the Los Angeles hearings. \nThese clips from those hearings were highlighted as part of a 2017 exhibition at JANM titled “Instructions to All Persons: Reflections on Executive Order 9066.”

DESCRIPTION:Ida B. Wells-Barnett was an investigative journalist\, civil-rights activist\, and suffragist. Wells gained national recognition for her journalistic investigations of lynching in the American south. She eventually moved to Chicago due to increasing threats and the eventual destruction of her newspaper\, the Free Speech. DESCRIPTION:In both the Richmond Bread Riot of 1863 and the ongoing protests against police brutality\, we hear the voice of people who suffer from inequitable systems – in 1863\, it was food distribution and inflation; now\, it is systemic racism in the law enforcement and criminal justice system. Though not the same\, placing the two protests side-by-side suggests enduring questions about protesting in America. Why are people compelled to do it? What happens when those in authority do not listen to the cries of their citizens? Is there a legitimate or illegitimate way to protest? What kind of solutions can protestors force authorities to concede\, if any? Join us in thinking about these questions in this virtual exhibit.
