SUMMARY:Virtual Fieldtrip of a New Memorial to Voting Rights
DESCRIPTION:Follow along this virtual field trip to explore “A Path Forward\,” a new memorial to voting rights history in Salt Lake City created by artists Kelsey Harrison and Jason Manley. Did you know Utah women were the first in the United States to vote under an equal suffrage law? This sculpture shares that history in the very spot where women cast their first votes in 1870. It pays homage to those first steps toward equality while reminding us of all that’s left to do to ensure that everyone has a say in our government. \nUtah women’s history nonprofit Better Days presented this memorial as a gift to the State of Utah to commemorate the 19th Amendment centennial in August 2020\, as well as the 150th anniversary of Utah women’s first votes and the 55th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act.

SUMMARY:Civic Renewal Conversation Guide
DESCRIPTION:Civic life encompasses the infinite ways that people may connect and contribute to their community and society: from voting in an election or organizing a neighborhood block-party\, to standing up for a just cause or supporting arts in our parks. For some time\, however\, many facets of civic life have been in decline. This conversation is an opportunity to reimagine our civic life. We have a chance now to embrace our interdependence and to create just and productive communities. Success depends on our ability to create spaces that foster relationships of belonging\, ensuring everyone has the opportunity and motivation to contribute to a thriving civic life.

SUMMARY:No-No Boy
DESCRIPTION:No-No Boy tells the story of Ichiro Yamada\, a fictional version of the real-life “no-no boys.” Yamada answered “no” twice in a compulsory government questionnaire as to whether he would serve in the armed forces and swear loyalty to the United States. Unwilling to pledge himself to the country that interned him and his family\, Ichiro earns two years in prison and the hostility of his family and community when he returns home to Seattle. As Ozeki writes\, Ichiro’s “obsessive\, tormented” voice subverts Japanese postwar “model-minority” stereotypes\, showing a fractured community and one man’s “threnody of guilt\, rage\, and blame as he tries to negotiate his reentry into a shattered world.”

DESCRIPTION:What lessons can we learn from Rep. John Lewis’ final message to the people of the United States? \nJohn Lewis\, the civil rights leader and congressman who died on July 17\, 2020\, wrote this essay shortly before his death. He requested the letter be published on the day of his funeral as a final message to the American people. How have we engaged in #GoodTrouble since that time\, and how might we continue to honor his legacy?

SUMMARY:Explore the Richmond Uprising Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:In both the Richmond Bread Riot of 1863 and the ongoing protests against police brutality\, we hear the voice of people who suffer from inequitable systems – in 1863\, it was food distribution and inflation; now\, it is systemic racism in the law enforcement and criminal justice system. Though not the same\, placing the two protests side-by-side suggests enduring questions about protesting in America. Why are people compelled to do it? What happens when those in authority do not listen to the cries of their citizens? Is there a legitimate or illegitimate way to protest? What kind of solutions can protestors force authorities to concede\, if any? Join us in thinking about these questions in this virtual exhibit.
