SUMMARY:Test your News Literacy with Informable
DESCRIPTION:Players develop the skills to become news-literate by practicing four distinct skills in a game format: distinguishing news articles from opinion pieces\, advertisements from other types of information\, false evidence from factual evidence\, and fact-based statements from opinion-based statements. Informable is an innovative step toward building more responsive tools for real-world learning — expanding beyond the classroom by offering educational opportunities to the public.

SUMMARY:The Senate and Women's Fight for the Vote
DESCRIPTION:In 1878 Senator Aaron Sargent became the first member of Congress to formally propose a constitutional amendment specifically to extend voting rights to women. The Senate never voted on Sargent’s proposal\, but the idea and the suffragists who supported it persisted. Senators—some of them working closely with activists—continued to debate women’s political rights over the next four decades as suffrage lobbyists ramped up pressure on members of Congress. After several failed attempts\, the Senate finally approved a constitutional amendment for woman suffrage on June 4\, 1919. Ratified in 1920\, the Nineteenth Amendment to the Constitution includes only 39 words\, two sentences that represent the work of generations of activists and a dedicated group of congressional reformers.

SUMMARY:Revolutionary Questions
DESCRIPTION:Viewed through a wider lens\, declaring independence involved more than a single document and a single historical moment. Before July 1776\, numerous local organizations had urged the Congress to embrace independence. And it was not just “Founding Fathers” but also a broader population whose actions gave the Declaration meaning. A broad-based Founding Generation—ordinary free men\, women held subordinate by law\, enslaved African Americans\, and others—brought their own ideas of liberty to the Revolutionary moment. \nLater generations\, too\, would struggle over Revolutionary issues\, some seeking to fulfill the Declaration’s proclaimed ideals and others promoting vested interests seeking to bypass popular consent. Given the many limits of the nation that the Revolution established\, can the Declaration still be a source of commitment and identity for Americans today? \nExplore these “Revolutionary Questions” to start a conversation in your community!

SUMMARY:In 1868\, Black suffrage was on the ballot
DESCRIPTION:Every election season in the United States revolves around a set of issues—health care\, foreign affairs\, the economy. In 1868\, at the height of the Reconstruction\, the pressing issue was Black male suffrage. When voters went to the polls that November\, they were asked to decide if and how their nation’s democracy should change to include Black men\, millions of whom were newly freed from slavery. It was up to voters to decide: should Black men be granted the right to vote?

SUMMARY:Women's Suffrage: The Movement in Louisville
DESCRIPTION:Only 100 years ago\, in 1920\, the 19th Amendment was ratified\, granting women the right to vote in the United States.\nThe fight for ratification was long and difficult for suffragists across the country\, but it wasn’t just a battle of national organizations and well-known leaders. Suffrage was gained through the hard work of women from every community and every walk of life. Suffragists were not all wealthy or influential\, but they were all determined to make their voices heard. The long-term results of their struggle are clear a century later: their efforts led to a breakdown of barriers that once barred women from realizing their potential as politicians\, professionals\, leaders\, and human beings. \nThis exhibit shares items from the Filson’s collections that document the suffrage movement in Louisville.

SUMMARY:Watch the National Youth Summit on Japanese American Incarceration
DESCRIPTION:During World War II\, the United States government forcibly removed over 120\,000 Japanese Americans from the Pacific Coast. These individuals\, two-thirds of them U.S. citizens\, were sent to ten camps built throughout the western interior of the United States. Many would spend the next three years living under armed guard\, behind barbed wire. In this webcast\, the panelists explored this period in American history and considered how fear and prejudice can upset the delicate balance between the rights of citizens and the power of the state.
