SUMMARY:Flag Folding Ceremony
DESCRIPTION:Participate in a moving ceremony featuring the unfurling and folding of a giant 36-foot American flag in the Great Hall. Reflect upon the civic democracy and history that the flag represents while learning the history of the adoption of our nation’s flag. Just as a flag this large requires many people to fold\, consider the many citizens and voices that make up and support our Republic. \nThis program is part of Civic Season a nationwide initiative presented in partnership with the Smithsonian and the History Made By Us coalition. \nCivic Season is a key component of the History Center’s America 101 initiative\, supported by the Nimick Forbesway Foundation and The Grable Foundation. America 101 is designed to engage the public in learning more about American history and civics through public programs\, exhibitions\, digital tools\, and educational curriculum.

SUMMARY:Bringing the War to an End-From Appomattox to Citronelle
DESCRIPTION:This lecture explores the critical final months of the American Civil War\, focusing on the series of surrenders that brought the conflict to a close. Starting with General Robert E. Lee’s surrender to Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Court House in April 1865\, we will trace the subsequent capitulations of Confederate forces across the South\, culminating in the surrender at Citronelle\, Alabama. By examining the terms of surrender\, the personal interactions between military leaders\, and the broader implications for the nation\, this session illuminates how these moments symbolized not just the end of a war but the beginning of a challenging journey toward reunification and reconstruction.

DESCRIPTION:Join Black Archives of Mid-America in Kansas City and the Greater Kansas City Black History Study Group for an author discussion of the new book\, The Wounded World: W.E.B. Du Bois & WWI. \nHope\, betrayal\, disillusionment and transformation. W.E.B.
