DESCRIPTION:It’s an Independence Day celebration with a twist: Traditionally-rigged sailing craft will rally to celebrate the historic voyages that carried the news of the signing of the Declaration of Independence to the Outer Banks. \nThe Friends of the North Carolina Maritime Museum will host the annual Great 4th Race on July 7 starting from the Beaufort Waterfront. The course covers between six and 20 miles and is designed so that the race will last between four and eight hours. The course\, which is based on wind and weather conditions\, will be announced the day of the race. \nThe start and finish line for the Great 4th Race is in Taylor’s Creek\, just off the dock of the museum’s Harvey W. Smith Watercraft Center on Front Street in downtown Beaufort. The best viewing for race spectators will be between 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. when the entrants are staged in Taylor’s Creek awaiting the race’s start. \nBoaters interested in participating must register in advance by calling 252-728-2762.

The Innoskate festival brings skateboarding and local communities together in a dynamic exploration of invention\, creativity\, fun and freedom of expression. \nThe Levitt Shell\, centrally located to downtown Sioux Falls in Falls Park\, and the Wounded\nKnee Four Directions Toby Eagle Bull Memorial Skatepark in Pine Ridge\, will provide dynamic\nbackdrops for the 2022 Innoskate festival. Discussions and live concerts featuring the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra ensemble and other national and local artists will examine the deep connections between music\, skateboarding\, creativity and innovation. In addition\, professional and Olympic skateboarders\, inventors\, scientists\, artists and local community leaders will engage audiences through a variety of demonstrations\, conversations and hands-on activities that explore the impact of skateboarding innovations in American culture. DESCRIPTION:New eye-opening feature documentary The Ground Between Us explores the public lands debate in a unique way; presenting the reality of the people who live and work on public lands\, but hold vastly different connections and perspectives. Through these stories\, co-directors Zeppelin Zeerip and Galen Knowles ask: “Can public lands help to unite a divided America?” \nSince 2017\, public lands throughout America have faced unprecedented threats. Bears Ears National Monument was shrunk by 85%\, the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge was opened to oil exploration\, and the Elliott State Forest in Oregon was nearly privatized. Throughout this\, Americans from both sides of the political spectrum have stood up and made their voices heard in support of protecting these areas. \nThe Ground Between Us follows the key issues of the public lands debate through the eyes of three families. In Alaska\, an indigenous tribe are claiming back their culture; in Oregon\, meet a family with a long history of living and working in the forests as loggers\, and in Utah\, a family of ranchers hailing from the old west are bringing up a new generation to appreciate the lands that are such an integral part of their lives. SUMMARY:Smithsonian Secretaries: 175 Years of Challenges and Achievements
DESCRIPTION:In its 175-year history\, the Smithsonian Institution has had just 14 secretaries. Who were these men (yes\, all were men) and how did they interpret founder James Smithson’s mandate for the increase and diffusion of knowledge? What challenges have they had to overcome or accept? \nHistorian Pamela Henson of Smithsonian Libraries and Archives\, who specializes in the Smithsonian’s institutional history\, focuses on five leaders who have left the largest imprints. \nIn 1846\, Joseph Henry\, a Princeton physics professor\, was elected the institution’s first secretary. He held the post for 32 years—the longest of any Smithsonian leader. Notable achievements of Spencer Baird (1878–1887) include the creation of the U.S. National Museum\, Astrophysical Observatory\, and the National Zoo. Alexander Wetmore (1945–1954) guided the institution through World War II and brought in the National Air and Space Museum and Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute. S. Dillon Ripley (1964–1984) added new museums\, new research institutes\, and cultural heritage centers\, some far from Washington\, D.C.\, and changed the composition of the staff to include women and minorities in positions of authority. (Ripley can also be thanked for the creation of the Smithsonian Associates.) \nHenson concludes with a look at Lonnie G. Bunch III\, the current—and first African American—secretary\, and how he is shaping the future of the institution\, which holds two new museums: the National Museum of the American Latino and the Smithsonian American Women’s History Museum. \nJoin Henson as she traces the stories of these leaders\, who guided the Smithsonian’s growth from its beginnings in the Castle to its present international scope encompassing 21 museums with holdings of 155 million objects\, a world-class zoo\, 8 research institutes\, 3 cultural centers\, and an ever-expanding educational mission.

By engaging America’s youth in fact-based\, nonpartisan and balanced deliberations\, we’ll foster informed opinions\, advance communication and critical thinking skills\, reveal common ground\, and bring democracy back to the people.\nPlease join our online deliberation on the Electoral College to discuss -with people of differing views- the questions raised about how we elect our president\, and how it might be different! To do so sign up for Kazm\, our free online video chat platform\, and then select a deliberation event in which to participate. After registering for a deliberation event\, you will be sent an email with a link to the event and a brief survey on the Electoral College with some short videos to watch prior to the event embedded. At the time of the deliberation event\, you will enter a Deliberations.US room in Kazm for an hour-long discussion on the Electoral College. The deliberation is organized into sections that first introduce the Electoral College then examine three potential reforms of the Electoral College. Our deliberations can accommodate any number of participants and through breakout rooms allow all participants the opportunity to speak\, listen\, and learn from people of diverse views and backgrounds. DESCRIPTION:Bill Keene\, a lecturer in history\, urban studies\, and architecture\, examines developments from the 1930s onward that shaped Los Angeles as a magnet for population migration and a major center of industry. \nEmergent airplane manufacturing during the 1930s established the foundation for the explosive growth to meet the demands of WWII. Shipbuilding\, aircraft production\, and other wartime industry enabled Los Angeles to become a leading industrial area in the postwar period. \nDuring the 1930s\, motion pictures and radio became factors in the daily lives of millions. With the development of television\, Hollywood became a presence in most homes\, further enhancing the visions of the Southern California filled with endless sun\, beautiful beaches\, and playgrounds of the glamorous. \nThe postwar boom brought more than a million new residents to Los Angeles alone\, seeking the lifestyle seen in the movies and TV and briefly experienced by the GIs who came through on their way to war and those who came to work in industry supporting the war effort. \nAlong with new population\, new challenges emerged or resurfaced. Air pollution became a major problem\, shadowing Sunny California’s image. Racial tensions grew. The city saw the expulsion of Japanese residents in 1942 and major outbreaks of violence across the decades\, from the Zoot Suit Riots of 1943 to the Los Angeles Riots of 1992\, with racial issues remaining a problem today. \nKeene also traces how during the same period\, Los Angeles emerged on the national and world stages as a major force economically and culturally. That status was reflected in the development of institutions including the County Museum of Art\, the Norton Simon and Getty museums\, and the Music Center (with its Disney Concert Hall)\, and the major-league baseball\, football\, and basketball teams that call it home.
