DESCRIPTION:Artwork created by youth\, for youth\, Resistance At Home is the culminating exhibition of artwork created by YouthCAN artists meditating on meanings of home and collective struggle. \nExplore identity and culture through art with the limited time exhibit at Wing Luke Museum. With a wide lens\, Resistance at Home seeks to uncover the ways in which we resist the US empire’s white supremacy\, queerphobia\, patriarchy\, and racial capitalism while situated in the belly of the beast. On a personal level\, Resistance at Home explores how we can take action in our own lives\, interrogate notions of home\, and recognize the personal as political. \nFrom Filipino labor organizing in the 20th century to contemporary gentrification in the Chinatown International District (CID)\, students explored the varied histories of Asian American\, Native Hawaiian\, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) resistance. \nYouthCAN is the Wing Luke Museum’s free art program for anyone aged 13-19 of all levels of artistic experience.

Only you can find clues to the truth. Step into the museum’s historic seven-sided barn as 17th century investigators tasked with discovering the evidence that could prove the innocence of an accused witch. Your group of up to ten people have one hour until the trial when the alleged witch will have their fate decided.  \nTime slots are available Tuesdays-Thursdays from 11:30 am to 5 pm; on Fridays and Saturdays slots run from11:30 am through 8 pm. All reservations last for 60 minutes\, with the recommendation of arriving 15 minutes prior to your start time. Tickets $20 for members\, $25 for non-members. Groups of 2-10 people. Reservations are required\, select your date and time online. Reservations close 48 hours prior to their posted start date. You may make your reservation private for an additional $20 per group.

DESCRIPTION:Join us at Jamestown Settlement on Wednesday\, June 14\, for a thought-provoking evening of history and performance exploring the precarious nature of freedom from 17th-century Jamestown to Juneteenth. \nAlthough Juneteenth springs from events that happened in Galveston\, Texas on June 19\, 1865\, the event celebrates liberation from a system of slavery with origins in Jamestown\, Va.\, as the place where the first recorded Africans in 1619 were brought after landing at Old Point Comfort and where the first slave laws enacted in the mid-17th century impacted the lives and status of Africans and their descendants. \nAs a prelude to Juneteenth\, Dr. Cassandra Newby-Alexander\, Endowed Professor of Virginia Black History and Culture at Norfolk State University\, takes up that legacy in history 246 years later at the end of the American Civil War to share the story of Black regiments attached to Virginia’s Army of the James. \nSome of these regiments were sent to Texas after the war to patrol the gulf region that included Galveston. Among their duties was keeping the peace after news of the Emancipation Proclamation was delivered to Galveston’s enslaved inhabitants. \nInterludes of song by Sylvia Tabb Lee & the Rejoicing Singers and dramatic readings from primary sources will complement the evening.

At the Museum\, visitors can explore the special exhibition “Black Founders: The Forten Family of Philadelphia\,” which examines the life and legacy of free Black Philadelphian\, Revolutionary War privateer\, and successful businessman James Forten and his descendants as they navigated the American Revolution and cross-racial relationships in Philadelphia to become leaders in the abolition movement in the lead-up to the Civil War and the women’s suffrage movement. The exhibit is open daily from 11am – 5pm and is included in regular Museum admission. \nThroughout the weekend\, visitors of all ages also can listen to pop-up talks about Phillis Wheatley\, the first published Black female poet\, and engage with a discovery cart about Harry Washington\, who was enslaved by the Washingtons and found freedom through service in the British army. DESCRIPTION:Taps\, a musical piece sounded at dusk and at funerals\, has a rich and storied history in the United States. It has long been associated with the U.S. Military\, and is often played at civilian events around the country. \nThe National WWI Museum and Memorial presents the ninth annual Taps at the Tower each evening at sunset (8:45 p.m.) from Sunday\, June 18 – Saturday\, June 24\, 2023. \nPeople are invited to come and use the grounds each evening\, have a picnic\, play games and enjoy the outdoors. At sunset\, people will gather at the Liberty Memorial Tower to experience Taps being played during a brief\, moving ceremony. The event will occur rain or shine. In the event of inclement weather\, the ceremony will be moved to the Paul Sunderland Bridge inside the Museum and Memorial.

SUMMARY:Juneteenth with the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts
DESCRIPTION:The festivities start at 9 AM when the John and Joyce Caddell Sculpture Garden gates open to a Second Line-style processional parade accompanied by Jonathan Michael and the G.W. Carver High School band and flag team. Visitors are invited and encouraged to join the processional and can pick up flags and noisemakers at the gates starting at 8:30 AM. \nVisitors can participate in art-making activities after the parade by designing their celebratory tambourines and Juneteenth flags. Throughout the morning\, attendees will enjoy live music from Jonathan Michael\, create sidewalk chalk art inspired by the holiday\, and get a family portrait at our photo booth with Juneteenth-inspired flair. Featured artist EL Chisolm\, based in Atlanta and a Birmingham native\, will lead a collaborative mural project with a reveal of the completed mural near the end of the event. Delicious\, free snacks and strawberry lemonade will be available on a first come\, first serve basis from the Museum’s cafe\, Verde. \nInside the Museum\, visitors can explore The Bias Inside Us\, an exhibition from the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service designed to raise awareness about the social science and psychology of implicit bias\, the impact of this bias\, and what people can do about it. Also on view are two exhibitions of youth art by local students from Valiant Cross Academy and the MMFA’s Teen Arts and Activism Camp\, with themes that celebrate the role of art in social change.
