SUMMARY:Juneteenth: A Story of Freedom
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, Jun. 16\, 7 p.m. via Zoom\nPresenters: Earl Ijames\, Curator of African American\, Agriculture\, and Community History\, North Carolina Museum of History; Chrystal Regan\, Education Section Chief\, North Carolina Museum of History \nJuneteenth (short for “June Nineteenth”) marks the day in 1865 (June 19th) when federal troops arrived in Galveston\, Texas\, to take control of the state and ensure that all enslaved people were freed—a full two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed and more than two months after America’s Civil War “officially” ended. Juneteenth—a celebration that spread the word about the passage of the 13th Amendment\, which outlawed slavery in the United States—is an important milestone in the fight for equality and provides an opportunity for us all to pause and consider the meaning of freedom and to rededicate ourselves to telling stories that reflect all members of our community. \nPlease join Ijames and Regan in an insightful conversation to examine the history behind this holiday and reveal why its celebration is more important now than ever. They will also explore North Carolina’s special connections to the historic event and share details about Raleigh’s inaugural Juneteenth Celebration.

SUMMARY:How Political Institutions Shape Outcomes and How We Might Reform Them
DESCRIPTION:In the US\, political institutions are often seen as neutral\, but in fact they reflect choices and compromises about how we balance between majority and minority interests. How can different systems of electoral decision-making in a democracy can\, by themselves\, lead to very different outcomes? How can we reform political institutions to make them more responsive to our needs?\nIn collaboration with the American Academy of Arts & Sciences.

SUMMARY:Masters of Modern Design: Art of the Japanese American Experience
DESCRIPTION:From the hand-drawn typeface on the book cover of The Godfather to Herman Miller’s biomorphic coffee table\, the work of Japanese American artists/designers including Ruth Asawa\, George Nakashima\, Isamu Noguchi\, S. Neil Fujita\, and Gyo Obata permeated American postwar culture. While these second generation Japanese American artists have been celebrated\, less-discussed is the powerful effect their World War II incarceration—a period of intense hardship and discrimination—had on their lives and art. \nThis documentary\, a co-production between JANM’s Watase Media Arts Center and KCET for the series ARTBOUND\, explores the ways in which their camp experiences impacted their existence\, influenced their art\, and sent them on trajectories that eventually led to their changing the face of American culture with their immense talents. \nThis film was awarded a Los Angeles area Emmy for the Arts.
