SUMMARY:How to Understand Power
DESCRIPTION:Power is like a language: the better we can understand\, interpret\, and “read” how power works\, the better mastery we achieve. If we think of it this way\, “fluency” in power helps us better plug into the power structure ourselves so we can work towards making our society “of\, by\, and for the people.” \nWatch this short video on how to understand power\, and then reflect on the questions.

SUMMARY:Jasmine Cho’s Portraits in Icing
DESCRIPTION:The Heinz History Center’s past exhibition\, Smithsonian’s Portraits of Pittsburgh: Works from the National Portrait Gallery\, reminded us of the remarkable national impact of people whose lives have intersected with this region. But the exhibition also challenges us to recognize the gaps in this legacy. Too many faces and stories still lack representation in contemporary museum collections. This is especially true for portraiture\, a type of art that by its very nature was immersed in issues of power and status. Why do some stories predominate while others are missing in these spaces and collections\, primarily the legacies of women and people of color? How can we broaden definitions of American achievement today and ensure that a fuller spectrum of stories and people are represented?

SUMMARY:Richmond Uprising - 1863 and today
DESCRIPTION:In both the Richmond Bread Riot of 1863 and the ongoing protests against police brutality\, we hear the voice of people who suffer from inequitable systems – in 1863\, it was food distribution and inflation; now\, it is systemic racism in the law enforcement and criminal justice system. Though not the same\, placing the two protests side-by-side suggests enduring questions about protesting in America. Why are people compelled to do it? What happens when those in authority do not listen to the cries of their citizens? Is there a legitimate or illegitimate way to protest? What kind of solutions can protestors force authorities to concede\, if any? Join us in thinking about these questions in this virtual exhibit.
