SUMMARY:The Senate and Women's Fight for the Vote
DESCRIPTION:In 1878 Senator Aaron Sargent became the first member of Congress to formally propose a constitutional amendment specifically to extend voting rights to women. The Senate never voted on Sargent’s proposal\, but the idea and the suffragists who supported it persisted. Senators—some of them working closely with activists—continued to debate women’s political rights over the next four decades as suffrage lobbyists ramped up pressure on members of Congress. After several failed attempts\, the Senate finally approved a constitutional amendment for woman suffrage on June 4\, 1919. Ratified in 1920\, the Nineteenth Amendment to the Constitution includes only 39 words\, two sentences that represent the work of generations of activists and a dedicated group of congressional reformers.

DESCRIPTION:The celebration kicks off at 10 a.m. Sunday\, June 13 when Betsy Ross\, herself\, raises the flag in the courtyard to mark the beginning of National Flag Week.  Once Upon A Nation Storytellers will entertain from the courtyard stage\, telling short\, interactive and little-known stories featuring our nation’s flag. \n\n\n\nOther highlights of the week will include the ongoing assembly of a larger-than-life American flag made entirely of M&M’s®. Enjoy free samples provided by Mars Wrigley and photo ops with the completed flag on Sunday\, June 13.  The moving\, annual naturalization ceremony will welcome 13 new citizens on Flag Day and during the week\, visitors will meet figures from history\, including famous suffragists and\, of course\, Betsy Ross\, herself. \n\n\n\nAll week\, the first 100 visitors to the House each day will receive free admission. Please note: free admission is only available on-site on a first-come\, first-served basis. We suggest guests arrive early to receive free admission. \n\n\n\nFree admission and Flag Fest programming are being made possible with the generous support of a patriotic friend of the Betsy Ross House.

DESCRIPTION:The Red Cross provides about 40% of our nation’s blood and blood components\, all from generous volunteer donors. But supply can’t always meet demand because only about 3% of age-eligible people donate blood yearly. \n\n\n\nCommunity blood drives are critical to maintaining a healthy blood supply in the U.S.—especially while many offices and schools remain closed due to the pandemic. Every two seconds\, someone in the U.S. needs blood\, from accident victims to children battling cancer to mothers giving birth. Healthy volunteer donors are the key to helping save lives. Join the Atlanta History Center for a blood drive to give back. \n\n\n\n10-3pm ET on Thursday June 17.

DESCRIPTION:The United States is a country founded by the people for the people\, but who are the people? Throughout history\, the answer to that question has changed. Join us for this civics and U.S. history themed program to learn how the government operates on a local\, state and federal level and the role of the individual in each. We will investigate the history and relationship between these three governing bodies and how their operations impact our everyday life and community. \n\n\n\nFREE admission as we welcome you back to the galleries these next few weeks! But tickets are required. \n\n\n\n\nTickets are for a 2hr timed visit beginning at 2pm ET in the North Building. \nTickets have been limited to ensure social distancing\, maximum of 25 on the tour. \nTickets are valid for the start time listed on ticket.\nCurrent State of Florida and Miami-Dade County COVID-19 policies will be strictly enforced.\n\n\n\n\nASL interpretation is available for this program.
