The Anthony Museum will also display a specially curated selection of quilt squares from its 2020 Quilt Project\, which was a collaborative public art project to honor women’s history and celebrate the Centennial Anniversary of the 19th Amendment. Over 325 quilt squares were submitted by people from people all over the United States and Canada. Each block represents a theme significant to the artist\, with a focus on the people\, places\, and events related to the woman’s suffrage movement or the unfinished business of securing equal rights for all. SUMMARY:Class Action Opening Day
DESCRIPTION:Join the DC History Center for grand opening of our new exhibit: Class Action: Education and Opportunity in the Nation’s Capital. The exhibit opens to the public Saturday\, June 28. From 2 to 6 pm\, you can: \n📚 Be among the first to explore the exhibit.\n🗣️ Chat with the folks who made it happen.\n🎯 Play classic recess games (for kids and grown-ups!)\n🎨 Design your own button.\n🛍️ Shop the revamped DC History Center store.\n📸 Take home duplicate copies from the Capitol Photo Service collection (with a suggested donation).\n📢 Help us spread the word—history class has never been this fun!\nBring your curiosity\, your friends\, and your love for DC history—we’ll bring the celebration! \nABOUT THE EXHIBIT\nClass Action: Education and Opportunity in the Nation’s Capital features stories of dedicated teachers\, school leaders\, parents\, students\, and activists who have worked to protect and strengthen DC’s tradition of Black educational excellence. Class photos and yearbooks along with playful vintage furniture and costumes invite hands-on exploration of what it means to grow up and go to school in the nation’s capital. \nCommunity members built and ran their own schools until the end of slavery\, when Congress created DC’s separate Black school system. Over the course of the next century\, racism prevented many African American scholars from pursuing their chosen careers. Instead\, they became teachers in the nation’s capital\, helping the city earn a national reputation for its outstanding Black schools. \nThe exhibit also highlights Black Washingtonians’ fight for their fair share of resources\, even after the Supreme Court finally desegregated DC’s “separate but equal” schools. The stories of people who lived this history\, along with class photos\, yearbooks\, and more\, are evidence of how local activism created lasting change. \nClass Action invites you to explore this inspiring legacy—and to reflect on how schools have shaped you and your community\, wherever you’re from. \nEXHIBIT HOURS\nClass Action is the DC History Center’s first major exhibition since 2019\, on display through 2030. The exhibit is free and open to the public. Regular exhibit hours will be Thursday-Sunday from 12 pm to 6 pm. \nTHANK YOU TO OUR EXHIBIT SPONSORS\nClass Action: Education and Opportunity in the Nation’s Capital is made possible thanks to the District of Columbia Executive Office of the Mayor–Office of the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development; the Institute for Museum and Library Services; Events DC; the Kiplinger Family Foundation; and the Julie B. Koczela Exhibit Fund. \nJune 28\, 2025\n2:00 pm–6:00 pm

SUMMARY:Community Healing: "Making and Mending" - Conversation about Art and Disability
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a moderated community conversation exploring how artists of South Asia and the diaspora navigate careers at the intersection of art and disability. This event invites participants into a community-building experience that highlights the resilience of artists with disabilities working in creative fields that are often not designed with accessibility in mind. Together\, we will engage in critical reflection and discuss how humanities-based institutions can lead the way in fostering more inclusive and accessible spaces. \nThe conversation will be moderated by Anand Venkatkrishnan\, an intellectual historian of South Asian religion and author of Love in the Time of Scholarship: The Bhāgavata Purāṇa in Indian Intellectual History. \nFeatured speakers include: \nPooja Pittie\, a Chicago-based visual artist living with a progressive form of muscular dystrophy\, whose work explores the tension between a slowing body and an active\, curious mind. \nGrishma Shah\, a self-taught painter and public health professional whose experience with a physical disability inspires her art and advocacy for disability as a valued identity. \nPriya Rama\, an Ohio-based artist who channels chronic migraines into vivid\, expressive work\, encouraging creativity as a response to chronic pain and stress. \nASL interpretation and online participation options will be available. Please register to receive a zoom link morning of the event. Mask-wearing is strongly encouraged in person. \nThis program is supported by a Healing IL grant from the Field Foundation and Illinois Humanities.
