SUMMARY:Feast of Reason
DESCRIPTION:Join us in downtown Charlottesville at South Street Brewery for an afternoon of food and discussion. After getting your food and beverage\, sit down with friends\, old and new\, and engage in conversation using our new conversation card deck. Dialogue about civics is the goal! SUMMARY:Waste as Art: Excavating Future Futures Through Multiple Perspectives
DESCRIPTION:Billy Dufala’s Future Futures\, one of the five monuments featured in the temporary exhibition Slow Motion\, is both a public sculpture and a material commodity. The monument is made of thirty-six bales of aluminum scraps\, each of which were diverted from landfills by human hands for future use. The bales are arranged into one large rectangular block\, staged for viewers to draw connections between the artwork and everyday life\, to reflect on extractive economies and practices\, and to contemplate the life cycles of aluminum. But how else might we make sense of Future Futures in multiple\, vastly different contexts—from the art museum to the landfill? This program is a conversation featuring an artist\, an anthropologist\, and a historian to highlight the multiple possibilities and perspectives for decoding Future Futures—Billy Dufala (artist and creative director of Recycled Artists in Residency)\, Robin Nagle (professor at New York University)\, and Paul Farber (founding director of Monument Lab). By bringing a diverse roster of thought partners together\, this period offers a myriad of insights\, new directions\, and collaborations are bound to emerge. The conversation will be moderated by Slow Motion’s curator\, Patricia Eunji Kim. \nCost of Talk Only: Free with admission\, Free for members

SUMMARY:Film Screening: Fannie Lou Hamer's America
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a powerful screening of Fannie Lou Hamer’s America\, a documentary that brings the voice of a civil rights legend to the forefront — raw\, unfiltered\, and more relevant than ever. SUMMARY:Sublime Narrative of Self Emancipation: An Artist Conversation with Curlee Raven Holton and Dr. Ashley Jordan
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an engaging conversation with artist Curlee Raven Holton\, Dr. Ashley Jordan (CEO\, African American Museum in Philadelphia)\, and David Brigham (Librarian and CEO\, Historical Society of Pennsylvania)\, as they explore the intersection of art\, history\, and social justice. Holton serves as the 2025 Artist in Residence at Historical Society of Pennsylvania. His new artist book\, The Sublime Narrative of Self Emancipation\, draws from HSP’s abolitionist collections and the rich traditions of Black spirituals. This dialogue will highlight the enduring legacy of the Pennsylvania Abolition Society and Holton’s creative response to archival stories of resistance\, resilience\, and liberation that continue to shape our understanding of freedom and community today.
