Calling for people to put down their guns and pick up their shovels\, these “gangster gardeners” are creating an oasis in the middle of one of the most notoriously dangerous places in America. \nCan You Dig This follows the inspirational journeys of four unlikely gardeners\, discovering what happens when they put their hands in the soil. This is not a story of science and economics. This is a story of the human spirit\, inspiring people everywhere to pick up their shovels and “plant some shit.”

DESCRIPTION:In-person\, in the Nan Tucker McEvoy Auditorium at the National Portrait Gallery \nQueer identity and disability – how can portraits help us understand these themes? Join a conversation with artist and educator Riva Lehrer and Cuban American writer Achy Obejas. Obejas was the subject of Lehrer’s piece that was a finalist in the Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition and is now on view in “The Outwin 2022: American Portraiture Today.” \nAs a part of the Tommie L. Pegues and Donald A. Capoccia Conversation Series in LGBTQ+ Portraiture\, this event will explore themes related to queer identity and disability. Moderated by the National Portrait Gallery’s curator of painting\, sculpture\, and Latinx art and history Taína Caragol\, and historian Mindy Farmer\, the conversation will also examine Lehrer’s method for creating Obejas’ portrait and the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. \nThe Portrait Gallery strives to provide programs that are accessible to all visitors. DESCRIPTION:FREE in-person\, drop-in program \nJuneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. From its Galveston\, Texas\, origin in 1865\, the observance of African American Emancipation Day has spread across the United States and beyond. \nToday\, Juneteenth commemorates African American freedom and emphasizes education and achievement. It is a day\, a week\, and\, in some areas\, a month marked with celebrations\, presentations\, picnics\, and family gatherings. Juneteenth is a time for reflection and rejoicing\, and for looking to the future. \nDrop-in at the NC Museum of History for an afternoon of activities inspired by the national holiday. Meet members of the Battery B Second Regiment\, US Colored Light Artillery Civil War reenactors\, as they reveal the legacy of the courageous soldiers in the struggle for freedom and citizenship during the American Civil War. Visit museum exhibits\, and watch Neal Thomas make split-oak baskets\, like those used by families at early Juneteenth celebrations. \nWe will also be screening a new documentary film from PBSNC titled George Henry White: Searching for Freedom. \nThe 30-minute documentary film will be screened in Daniels Auditorium at the North Carolina Museum of History in Raleigh from 7 to 9 p.m. Admission is free. \nThe historical biographical film chronicles the career of African American US congressman George H. White\, whose last term in Congress ended in 1901 after the disenfranchisement of African Americans across North Carolina. \nWhite’s final words to Congress predicted that African Americans would one day return to its halls despite the onset of the Jim Crow era. President Barack Obama recognized White’s accomplishments in a 2009 speech that brought the congressman’s legacy back into the spotlight. White’s rise to political leadership and his remarkable career are well known to historians\, but his story has been largely left out of the mainstream historical narrative. \nNorth Carolina historians and authors Crystal R. Sanders\, Earl Ijames\, David S. Cecelski\, and Benjamin R. DESCRIPTION:In celebration of Juneteenth\, the holiday that commemorates the ending of slavery in the United States\, visitors to the Library of Virginia will have the rare opportunity to view a selection of “Free Negro Registers” displayed in the lobby and to learn about the Library’s efforts to digitize\, preserve\, and make them more accessible. These records demonstrate Virginia’s efforts to control and regulate its growing free Black population from the late 18th century to the Civil War. The registers provide the names\, ages\, and physical descriptions of free Black and multiracial individuals who were required to register in their Virginia locality. \nLydia Neuroth\, project manager for Virginia Untold\, will be on hand to discuss the records and answer questions. The Virginia Untold project provides digital access to collections from Virginia localities relating to enslaved and free Black individuals prior to 1866. \nThe exhibition of records runs through Monday\, June 27\, 2022. \n\n

STUNT imagines scenes from the life of Nellie Jackson. Born in 1902\, Miss Nellie ran a brothel in Natchez\, Mississippi for sixty years until her death in 1990. A freedom fighter and entrepreneur who spied on the KKK and supported civil rights activists\, Nellie Jackson is a legend that troubles our notions of Black narratives and histories. By turns jubilant\, sensual and violent\, STUNT imagines Nellie as a woman who revels in her Blackness\, power and creation.

By engaging America’s youth in fact-based\, nonpartisan and balanced deliberations\, we’ll foster informed opinions\, advance communication and critical thinking skills\, reveal common ground\, and bring democracy back to the people.\nPlease join our online deliberation on the Electoral College to discuss -with people of differing views- the questions raised about how we elect our president\, and how it might be different! To do so sign up for Kazm\, our free online video chat platform\, and then select a deliberation event in which to participate. After registering for a deliberation event\, you will be sent an email with a link to the event and a brief survey on the Electoral College with some short videos to watch prior to the event embedded. At the time of the deliberation event\, you will enter a Deliberations.US room in Kazm for an hour-long discussion on the Electoral College. We are building a database of interviews with Black and White student athletes\, cheerleaders\, school administrators\, teachers\, coaches\, local leaders\, and parents who share their stories of that tumultuous time. DESCRIPTION:Jobie Hill is a preservation architect\, who launched the project “Saving Slave Houses” in 2012 to ensure that slave dwellings and their history were not lost forever. This illustrated lecture will highlight ongoing slave house research\, fieldwork efforts\, and new methods of interpretation. Today’s preservation project stakeholders now include the voices of diverse groups. These changes have helped to empower historically excluded communities and preserve irreplaceable historic and cultural resources that are quickly disappearing and being forgotten.

They will discuss NMWA’s long-term loan of silver objects to the BMA as well as the realities of women silversmiths in late 18th- and early 19th-century London. \nAbout Brittany Luberda\nBrittany Luberda is the assistant curator of decorative arts at the BMA\, where she curates the American and European collection of objects and furniture. Prior to joining the BMA\, Brittany held decorative arts curatorial positions at the Saint Louis Art Museum and the Frick. Luberda is working on two reinstallations of Europe Art 1400–1800 and American Art Colonialism through the 1960s at the BMA. One of the most recognized figures in the global debate community\, he has won both the World Schools Debating Championship and the World University Debating Championship. Seo has written for The New York Times\, The Atlantic\, CNN\, and many other outlets. Seo graduated from Harvard University and received a master’s degree in public policy from Tsinghua University.
