SUMMARY:Juneteenth Program: "Black Lawmen in Indian Territory"
DESCRIPTION:The Oklahoma Historical Society will commemorate Juneteenth with a FREE educational program at the Oklahoma History Center on Thursday\, June 19! Doors open at 5:30 p.m.\, and the program will begin at 6 p.m. Juneteenth is the celebration of emancipation following the U.S. Civil War. \nAttendees will have the opportunity to learn from and take photos with historical reenactors Shiron and Oscar Ray—and Oscar will be portraying Bass Reeves!\nAward-winning author Art T. Burton will also give a presentation about the experiences of Black lawmen on the frontier. Burton is the author of several books\, including “Black\, Red\, and Deadly: Black and Indian Gunfighters of the Indian Territory\, 1870–1907” and “Black Gun\, Silver Star: The Life and Legend of Frontier Marshal Bass Reeves\,” which can be purchased during the event. Burton will be available for a book signing after his presentation. \nThis annual event is organized by the Oklahoma Historical Society and the Black Heritage Committee. No registration is required. Light refreshments will be served during the event. \nMORE ABOUT JUNETEENTH: On June 19\, 1865\, U.S. Army Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger proclaimed the end of slavery at Galveston\, Texas. News of emancipation spread north to the enslaved people in Indian Territory (present-day Oklahoma) at different times during the summer of 1865. However\, emancipation was not immediate for all enslaved people—it was enforced later through the Reconstruction Treaties of 1866.

Dr. Hilton J McClendon\, Sr. is pastor of Allen Chapel AME Church in Cheyenne. He began preaching as a child\, 58 years ago. Since that time\, he has pastored more than seven churches and has “church planted” three churches. He founded and is president of I Am My Brother’s and Sister’s Keeper of Cheyenne homeless ministry. The Rev. Dr. McClendon is a chaplain with the Cheyenne Police Department for the past six years. He has more than 20 years experience producing\, directing\, and hosting television shows across the country. In 2019\, he started the Sunday morning TV show “Moments of Inspiration” on Fox 27 in Cheyenne. He is a member of the Cheyenne Kiwanis Club and the Greater Cheyenne Chamber of Commerce. The Rev. Dr. McClendon loves to sing\, especially gospel songs\, and has four recordings\, one of which\, “Projection of Love\,” can be found on Spotify. \n● Jim Byrd is a fifth-generation Wyomingite who grew up in Cheyenne and served five terms in the Wyoming Legislature. He served as Minority Whip from 2013 to 2015 and was elected to serve as Minority Caucus Leader in 2015. His mother\, Harriet “Liz” Byrd\, was the first African-American woman in the Wyoming Legislature\, and his grandfather\, Robert “Buck” Rhone\, was in the first graduating class of Cheyenne High School.

Named for dinners that Jefferson hosted and known for their good food and interesting conversation\, the Feast of Reason is a new card deck that facilitates conversations on history and democracy over food and drink.

DESCRIPTION:As part of the HBC’s 53rd Annual Members’ Exhibition\, book artists were given a unique opportunity to create original works using sections of a donated Gilbert Baker Rainbow Flag that once flew over Harvey Milk Plaza in San Francisco’s historic Castro district in which the flag was first created. \nSlippery\, synthetic\, and stubborn\, the fabric resisted precision—fraying\, warping\, and pushing back at every turn. Much like the queer identities and experiences it represents\, it demanded care\, patience\, and persistence. \nJoin us for a panel discussion exploring the resulting works: a spectrum of interpretations that reflect the challenges\, beauty\, and meaning embedded in the flag and the hands that shaped it. Meet some of the artists\, learn about their processes\, and hear about some of the challenges they encountered turning their vision into a book.

DESCRIPTION:In honor of the 2025 Civic Season\, the Tennessee Democracy Network and members of the United By Change Coalition invite you to join us in cleaning up one of Chattanooga’s oldest African American cemeteries. \nMissionary Ridge Baptist Church was founded by free Black Chattanoogans in 1874\, during the postwar Reconstruction period. Join us in honoring the historic legacy of those buried on the grounds as we clean headstones\, decorate graves\, and have insightful conversations about the history of Chattanooga.
