SUMMARY:Juneteenth Evening of Songs and Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Jamestown Settlement on Wednesday\, June 14\, for a thought-provoking evening of history and performance exploring the precarious nature of freedom from 17th-century Jamestown to Juneteenth. \nAlthough Juneteenth springs from events that happened in Galveston\, Texas on June 19\, 1865\, the event celebrates liberation from a system of slavery with origins in Jamestown\, Va.\, as the place where the first recorded Africans in 1619 were brought after landing at Old Point Comfort and where the first slave laws enacted in the mid-17th century impacted the lives and status of Africans and their descendants. \nAs a prelude to Juneteenth\, Dr. Cassandra Newby-Alexander\, Endowed Professor of Virginia Black History and Culture at Norfolk State University\, takes up that legacy in history 246 years later at the end of the American Civil War to share the story of Black regiments attached to Virginia’s Army of the James. \nSome of these regiments were sent to Texas after the war to patrol the gulf region that included Galveston. Among their duties was keeping the peace after news of the Emancipation Proclamation was delivered to Galveston’s enslaved inhabitants. \nInterludes of song by Sylvia Tabb Lee & the Rejoicing Singers and dramatic readings from primary sources will complement the evening.

This true story reveals the strength\, tenacity\, and resistance of African people during the Middle Passage\, captured on a ship\, headed to the New World. \nEquiano is our origin story which does not begin in enslavement. In this series\, we will compare Joseph’s vision for El Paso to what is has become in the last 150 years. Guest speakers from municipal agencies will be invited to speak about their departments and let us know why and when we might need to call upon them to help us keep El Paso thriving. \nThis session\, we will discuss what it means to live in a historic district and what resources are available to homeowners with El Paso’s Historic Preservation Officer\, Providencia Velásquez\, the Chief Preservation Officer for the City of El Paso\, and learn about her work and vision for El Paso. One of the defining features of El Paso is the architectural gems scattered across its landscape—from the historic Missions to downtown El Paso’s Trost masterpieces\, Segundo Barrio’s tenement houses and the craftsman homes of Manhattan Heights and beyond. Learn more about the City of El Paso Historic Preservation Office which helps the home and business owners in these districts preserve these important buildings. This session will be particularly useful for anyone who lives or works in a historic building as it will highlight locally available resources. \nThis is a series meant to help us all become more aware of and confident in using city services available to us all and to celebrate 150 years of being an incorporated city in Texas.
